3. La Jolla Shores

La Jolla Shores is a popular, mile-long family beach, with gentle waves, convenient parking, grassy picnic areas, swings, fire rings and volleyball. Located near shops and restaurants, it can be very crowded in the summer. Boating, sailing and fishing are allowed on the north side of the pier. La Jolla Shores is a good scuba diving locale because of its easy surf entry and the rich offshore kelp forests in the underwater preserve. It is also an excellent beach for beginning surfers and has a public kayak launch. Lifeguards are on duty year-round and restrooms and outdoor showers are available. Just south of the beach and north of the pier is the private Scripps Beach, which belongs to the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
