Meander south along La Jolla's 7-mile coastline and you'll discover 10 beautiful beaches. From north to south, they are Torrey Pines State Beach, Black's Beach, La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Cove, Boomer Beach, Shell Beach & Seal Rock, Children's Pool, Wipeout Beach, Marine Street Beach & Whispering Sands, and Windansea Beach. Each of these beaches is beautifully unique and offers something special for you to enjoy.
On the north side of La Jolla, adjacent to the Torrey Pines State Reserve just south of Del Mar, Torrey Pines State Beach is ideal for surfers, swimmers, hikers and walkers. You can access the beach from the Coast Highway or through the hiking paths of the State Reserve. Many enjoy this beach at sunset, when the steep cliffs in the background take on a reddish glow. At the south end, you'll find the more secluded Black's Beach, where bathing suits are (unofficially) optional. Just south of Torrey Pines is La Jolla Shores, a popular, mile-long swimming beach with gentle waves and a grassy park area. It's ideal for families, beginning surfers, and even has a launching ramp for kayaks.
Next to downtown La Jolla are several smaller beaches dotting the curved coastline. The Cove, facing north, is protected from waves and ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. For watching sea lions and harbor seals, there's Seal Rock and Children's Pool. Boomer Beach is a great body-surfing spot, and when the waves are not too big, it can also be a good beach for shell collecting and snorkeling. La Jolla's popular surfing beaches include Wipeout, Marine Street, and Winansea. At the south end of La Jolla, just north of Bird Rock, Winansea was made famous in the 60s by the Beach Boys and by American journalist Tom Wolfe, who wrote about Winansea surfers in "The Pump House Gang."
If you're a beach lover, you won't be disappointed in what La Jolla has to offer. On La Jolla's beaches you can walk, hike, explore tide pools, sunbathe, swim, snorkel, dive, surf, and kayak – or just sit back and watch the waves and the sunset.
