Located at the Embarcadero near downtown San Diego, the San Diego Maritime Museum is a favorite attraction for San Diego visitors. The Maritime Museum was founded in 1948 to collect and preserve the city's rich maritime heritage and remains as an ongoing tribute to the community of San Diego's seafaring history.
The San Diego Maritime Museum is home to five historic ships that are examples of different maritime vessels. They include the Star of India, Berkeley, Californian, Medea and Pilot.
The Maritime Museum also includes five permanent exhibitions that represent major themes of maritime history and their connection to San Diego: Age of Sail, Age of Steam, Charting the Sea, Harvesting the Ocean and The Navy. The main exhibits are on the Berkeley.
