Even if hang ten and dude are not a part of your everyday vocabulary, it's never too late to learn how to ride the waves like a native San Diego surfer. Ask any surfer and he or she will tell you there's no experience quite like it. Surfing in San Diego is a way of life. Local surfers will also tell you that San Diego, with 75 miles of beautiful coastline, has some of the best surfing beaches in Southern California. With many places to take lessons, rent boards and surf in San Diego, there's no reason not to grab a board and test the waters.
Several beaches in La Jolla are ideal for surfing while you're visiting San Diego. These include Black's Beach, La Jolla Shores, and Windansea. Black's Beach has some of the best waves year round, sometimes reaching 12 feet in the winter months. La Jolla Shores, with gentle waves, is an ideal beach for beginning surfers, and includes surfing schools if you want to take lessons. Windansea is a well-known surfing beach on the south side of La Jolla. It offers reliably consistent surf break, as well as spots for relaxing and sunbathing. It can be crowded.
