If you'd love to horseback ride but watching "Mr. Ed" is the closest you've ever come to a horse, don't despair. San Diego stables have rental horses and lessons available for riders of all levels, from beginners to professionals. There are many riding trails throughout San Diego and one is sure to appeal to you. You can pack a lunch and ride in the tranquil Cuyamaca and Laguna mountains. Or you can also follow trails through a sandy river bed or along the beach near the San Diego border.
There's a horse for everyone here. Ride through trails in a pleasant riding area near the Sweetwater River. Although the rides are guided, they are not walking tours; trotting and cantering is allowed. Trail rides are $40 for an hour, $50 for one and a half hours and $60 for two hours. Groups of 10 or more should call for reservations. Private and group lessons are also available.

Sweetwater Farms offers horseback riding lessons and trail rides for all levels of riders. They provide gentle dude ranch horses everyone will feel comfortable riding. Trail rides are $45 an hour. They are open Tuesdays through Sundays and on most holidays.

Happy Trails is located near the only beach in San Diego that allows horseback riding. So if trotting or galloping along the beach with the salt air in your face appeals to you, Happy Trails is for you. The company also offers trail rides in other parts of San Diego. Beach rides are $100 for two hours and $135 for three hours. Guided trail rides are $50 for an hour and $75 for one and a half hours.
