Family Friendly Restaurants in La Jolla | La Jolla Blue Book

Family Dining in La Jolla

Eating out with young, or even older, children can be a challenge. Fortunately there are several family-friendly restaurants in La Jolla that make it easier for parents and grandparents to satisfy finicky taste buds and to relax and have fun in a welcoming environment.

Harry's Coffee Shop. Since the early 1960s, Harry's Coffee Shop on Girard has been a popular breakfast and lunch spot for families. The restaurant itself is a family-run business, founded by the late Harry Rudolph whose eight children have continued to manage it through the years. Although there is a separate menu for smaller appetites, most families who enjoy Harry's find that splitting the foods on the regular menu, whether breakfast or lunch, works out well. The dollar pancakes, nut and fruit waffles, and cinnamon rolls are always a big hit with kids for breakfast, while parents can select from whole wheat banana or oatmeal pancakes, thick French toast, omelets and other egg dishes, and several combination plates. For lunch, both adults and children at Harry's have a wide choice of sandwiches and burgers. You can even sneak in a side of fresh fruit or save some room for fountain favorites such as Harry's Famous Milkshakes, root beer or cola floats, or ice cream sodas.

Bistro Pazzo. Bistro Pazzo has built a reputation for itself as being your friendly, neighborhood bistro. Owner Seto Marselian, a longtime local with more than 30 years of restaurant experience mainly in La Jolla, has realized his vision of having a neighborhood eatery where friends and families can meet in a comfortable setting and enjoy delicious Italian cuisine. Located one block from Prospect Street on Ivanhoe Avenue in La Jolla village, Bistro Pazzo is where great friends meet great food.

The Shores Restaurant. If you're lucky enough to be staying at the La Jolla Shores Hotel, you won't have to go far to eat with your kids. The Shores Restaurant in the hotel has a reputation for fresh, California cuisine and also for providing a welcoming atmosphere for children. Of course, you don't have to stay at the hotel to enjoy this family friendly restaurant in La Jolla. Many local families take advantage of the friendly service and beachside dining at The Shores on a regular basis. The Sunday brunch is particularly popular with families and offers a kid's station so they can select their own food. For breakfast, lunch and dinner, there is a special menu for young diners, ages 12 and under. For breakfast, the kid friendly restaurant offers a menu including silver dollar pancakes, French toast, eggs, bagels and assorted dry cereals. For lunch or dinner, The Shores offers children several appealing choices, including hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken fingers, cheese quesadilla, mac and cheese, or a classic PB&J sandwich. The drinks menu for the younger set includes milk, soft drinks, fruit juice, hot chocolate, Shirley Temple, Roy Rodgers, lemonade and milkshakes.

Sammy's Woodfired Pizza. Located at Pearl and Draper is another popular family restaurant in La Jolla. Who doesn't love pizza? The first Sammy's opened in La Jolla in 1989 with the idea of making gourmet pizzas for everyone, young and old alike. The concept succeeded in a big way and Sammy's now has 18 locations on the west coast, with the original one right here in sunny La Jolla, California. With more than 15 pizzas to choose from, all members of the family are likely to find what they love, whether basic cheese and tomato, or unusual combinations such as barbecue chicken, garlic shrimp, or arugula and pear. Sammy's pizzas also include several vegan and gluten-free options. You can order large pizzas to share or smaller, individually-sized pizzas. In addition to pizza, Sammy's offers a delicious selection of tapas, from mini duck tacos to pork dumplings, large salads with fresh chicken and fish, grilled fish and chicken entrees, tacos, and pastas. For dessert, no family can leave without diving into the Messy Sundae. Served in a huge glass dessert dish with several spoons, the sundae includes vanilla ice cream, chocolate and caramel sauce (which is usually running over the sides), walnuts, and whipped cream. With so many options, it's no surprise Sammy's is a popular La Jolla family restaurant.
