Wallet Friendly & Casual Dining Restaurants in La Jolla
When you think casual dining, La Jolla might not be the first part of San Diego that comes to mind. In fact, unlike Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach which are known for their laid back nature, La Jolla is like their older law school graduate brother. La Jolla is probably the most sophisticated of all the local beach communities, but that doesn't mean you can't mix and relax comfort. Here are five of the casual dining restaurants in La Jolla city limits for those days when you'd rather leave the suit and tie at home.
Prepkitchen was created for the purpose of supplying gourmet quality good at a price regular people can afford. With that amazing food and the modest price point Prepkitchen is the best of both worlds; a culinary treat where your California standard issue jeans and flip flops are welcome. It's the perfect stop for an intimate pre-beach lunch date.
Puesto is inspired by authentic Mexican street food, Puesto takes the cart inside and mixes in a business model that revolves around sustainable homemade food. They make everything in house, including their stone-ground tortillas and menagerie of spices. Add the perfectly braised meats (don't pass on the carnitas) and surprising vegetarian options like the zucchini flower tacos and you've got a delicious lunch.
Bubba's Smokehouse BBQ doesn't get more casual than a folded piece of pizza in half and walking down the street. The finger lickin' nature of the beast makes it hard to eat without a napkin tucked into the front of your shirt. Bubba's wears it well with their Southern style ribs, brisket, tri-tip, chicken and sides such as cornbread muffins and collard greens. They are also family friendly and have a "Little Bubba's Menu" for the little ones who aren't quite ready for their own rack of ribs.
Girard's Gourmet: constantly has queue of people lined up to take their pick of the deli counter items and baked goods at Girard's Gourmet. The humble deli counter, which has been feeding La Jolla for over twenty-five years, serves an array of deli classics made right such as soups, salads, and sandwiches. If you are lucky enough to go on a day when they have the teriyaki salmon available don't pass it up. The cookies in the window aren't just for looking at, they are as delicious as they are adorable. Each one has a different flavor of icing so each cookie is a surprise.
Spice & Rice is the expert on both spices and rice. The local Thai food mecca has a little asterisk denoting a spicy option next to nearly every dish. Don't worry, because every dish is made to order, you can pick your level. Even their mild dishes are full of robust flavors. Add that to their pretty plating and lunch specials under $10 and you've got a great meal for a weekday lunch or a weekend dinner out.
