Best Steak Houses in La Jolla
Steak lovers have several dining options, including three award-winning La Jolla restaurants, each in a unique location.
A.R. Valentien at the Lodge at Torrey Pines embodies the spirit of early California, with its warm Craftsman-style architecture. The atmosphere is elegant and intimate, with several small dining rooms and plush booths. The La Jolla steakhouse is named after a California impressionist painter A.R. Valentien, whose paintings decorate the walls. Originally the chief decorator of the Rookwood Pottery in Ohio, Valentien moved to San Diego in 1908 and was commissioned by Ellen Browning Scripps to paint 1,000 California native wildflowers for her private library. The restaurant may have an old-time feel, but certainly not an old-fashioned menu or chef. Under the direction of Jeff Jackson, executive chef, A.R. Valentien has won many awards in recent years, including that of best farm to table restaurant and best hotel restaurant. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with an emphasis on seasonal foods that are available locally. In addition to several cuts of beef, including the Niman Ranch New York strip steak, you can choose from many other entrees such as pork loin, duck breast, free-range chicken, prosciutto wrapped sea bass, scallops and swordfish. A.R. Valentien also hosts regular holiday brunches and an "Artisan Table" menu on Thursday evenings.
If a steak lunch or dinner with an ocean view is your idea of a perfect meal, then the Steakhouse at Azul is for you. Sitting next to floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the La Jolla Cove, you can enjoy chef Carl Grobner's many specialties, including 100% USDA Prime steaks, Kobe-style Wagyu beef, and a delicious selection of chops, poultry, seafood and shellfish. One of the top steakhouses in La Jolla for lunch, guests can select from several soups, salads, and sandwiches, including the steak salad, the Wagyu burger, the baked prime cheese steak sandwich, and, of course, steak fries. Another popular La Jolla restaurant known for their steaks Donovan's Steak and Chop House is located across from Westfield University Towne Centre (UTC) in the Golden Triangle area. The restaurant is open for dinner daily except Sunday and hosts a popular Martini Hour between 4 and 6 p.m. Donovan's is a classic steakhouse with a lively, friendly atmosphere. It was voted by the California Restaurant Association as the best San Diego Steakhouse. Donovan's Steakhouse in La Jolla prides itself in serving only the best USDA Prime steaks. In fact, their website includes an informative guide to USDA grading standards. Donovan's fresh steaks are never frozen. You can select from several cuts and sizes, including prime filet, New York strip, bone-in New York, rib eye, t-bone, porterhouse and filet mignon.
