Tips to Help Prepare Your Hot Water Heater for Winter

Winters in California are cold enough, but La Jolla's beautiful location is also close enough to the coast to make things just a little sharper. Your pipes may never be in danger of freezing, but running out of hot water in winter can happen. The best way to prevent this is to call one of the quality La Jolla plumbers from our Blue Book guide and have your water heater prepared for winter.

Have the coils serviced. Hire a plumber to come check out, clean and replace the coils in the water heater if necessary. Many times, all the coils need is a thorough cleaning to remove the dust and debris that have accumulated around them to return your hot water heater to full service. Depending on the age of your water heater, it may be better to replace them. A qualified plumber will be able to tell you which is the best route to take.

Insulate the tank and pipes. Make sure to have the plumber put insulation around the hot water pipes in the home and to wrap the water heater in an insulating blanket. Most homes constructed in the region will not automatically have insulation added and the amount of heat your water can lose while getting from the heater to the appliance is significant.

Mind the Dip. The main reason you want to hire a local plumber to check your water heater before winter is the dip tube needs to be examined. The dip tube is the tube that passes between your cold water supply and into the hot water heater. An experienced plumber will be able to tell if the plastic of the tube is cracked or old enough to be in danger of cracking and replace it. A cracked dip tube will leak cold water into your hot water storage and reduce the temperature of the water.
