Pilates in La Jolla
Pilates is a popular form of exercise that focuses on core strength, balance and flexibility. It is a popular method of exercise that works well for a wide range of people.
The Pilates method of exercise was created by Joseph Pilates (1883-1967) in the early 1900s. Born in Germany, son of a gymnast father and a naturopath mother, Pilates suffered from rickets and asthma as a child and developed an early interest in body building, yoga, gymnastics and other sports to improve his strength. In 1912 he moved to England where he boxed professionally. Even though he worked for Scotland Yard as a trainer, he was interned with other Germans as an "enemy alien" during World War I. While living at the internment camps, he developed a system of exercise to help himself and others. Using mats, yoga poses, and ropes and springs rigged to hospital beds and focusing on core muscles and resistance training, he called his system Contrology. In 1925, Pilates moved to New York City and with his wife opened an exercise studio. He expanded on his method by developing additional pieces of equipment, especially the Reformer (a platform that moves back and forth along a carriage, using weights and springs) and the Cadillac (or Trapeze or "Trap" Table, using springs for legs and arms, loops for hanging, a push-through bar and a trapeze). Not surprisingly, these pieces of equipment resemble beds, and are the basic equipment in Pilates studios today.
Because Pilates helps elongate and strengthen muscles, it attracted many dancers in its early days. Now it has become popular with many exercise fans. Pilates studios are popping up on every corner and most gyms and yoga studios also offer Pilates mat classes. There are several pilates studios in La Jolla alone where you can enjoy the Pilates method.
