Where Can I Get A Flu Shot?

Everyone older than six months should get a yearly flu shot, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Exceptions are those with flu shot allergies or other medical conditions such as a current illness with a fever. You should always check with your local La Jolla doctor first.

Because the strains of influenza are constantly changing, some flu seasons are milder than others. But it's still important to protect yourself against new strains as soon as each year's new vaccines are available. It takes approximately two weeks for the antibodies to build up against the flu after you receive the vaccine. The CDS especially recommends vaccination for those with medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes and chronic lung disease; pregnant women; people 65 and older; or people who live with or care for others who are high risk of developing serious complications.

Getting a flu vaccine lowers your risk of getting the flu and helps prevent the spread of the flu to others. Flu vaccines usually begin in September and continue through the flu season, which peaks in January. The vaccines are available in regular doses, pediatric doses for children, and high-doses for those 65 and older. There is even an intradermal version now available for those who hate shots and are between 18 and 64. This version uses a 90 percent smaller needle that injects into the skin instead of the muscle.
