Pre-Surgery Preparation Tips

From tooth extractions to bypasses, every surgery is going to present a number of unique hurdles for a patient. In addition to this, many will experience feelings of anxiety just beforehand that could add to the confusion. For those that are preparing for surgery, proper preparation will not only improve recovery time, it will also help to assuage much of the stress and unease beforehand.

The first step is to double-check that all obligations are thoroughly taken care of. Leaving things like bills, requests for days off, and grocery runs until the last minute will add to the worries. The patient should then verify that there will be a responsible adult either on-hand or nearby at all times for some of the most common chores and errands that will be needed. This includes a ride to and from the hospital and basic care in the coming days.

Patients are also going to need to have a thorough conversation with their primary healthcare provider in order to understand exactly what their medical needs will be both before and after the surgery. These needs change on a case-to-case basis, but most La Jolla surgeons want to ensure that patients have a full night's sleep and that any questions about surgery have been asked and discussed. Depending on the type of surgery, there may also be other requirements such as switching to an all liquid diet or even taking a regimen of antibiotics.

When it finally comes to the day of the surgery, it is important to stay as positive and calm as possible. Most patients are going to want to have a few changes of comfortable clothes with them, as well as basic personal items such as cell phones and chargers. Options such as inhalers and eye drops are a great idea to bring along, but surgeons will often suggest to leave jewelry at home and to remove makeup to avoid any complications.

While surgery can be a daunting event, no matter what the procedure being performed, proper planning can help alleviate concerns and create a stress free experience.
