Where Luxury Meets Sustainability: Green Hotels in La Jolla

Many businesses, including La Jolla hotels, have joined the eco-friendly, green movement. What classifies a green hotel? Exceptional green hotels have sustainable features in categories such as water, energy, waste, and purchasing, for both indoor and outdoor spaces. While many hotels are in compliance with basic sustainability standards, a handful of hotels in La Jolla go above and beyond regular green practices.

The Empress Hotel of La Jolla is a boutique hotel that is not only recognized for its hospitality and attentive service, but for its focus on sustainability. The hotel's luxurious accommodations feature energy efficient light bulbs, recycling bins, water efficient showerheads and faucets, and organic and biodegradable toiletries. The hotel has also painted more than 10% of its roof white, a practice used to reflect heat, thus reducing the energy needed to cool the building.

Another eco-friendly hotel is the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines. Although this 394 room resort is large in size, it still adheres to exceptional green standards. The hotel hosts green training sessions for its 100+ staff, provides education for guests on local environmental issues, and features a towel reuse program for guests who would like to be as eco friendly as possible during their stay. Beyond towel and linen reuse programs, the Hilton Hotel expands their green efforts to their restaurant, the Torreyana Grille. More than half of the fruit and vegetables, and more than three quarters of the grains, breads, meat, fish and dairy are certified in accordance with organic and fair trade practices.

Another hotel leading the green movement is the Marriott La Jolla located near the UCSD campus. The hotel recycles, uses energy efficient lighting and appliances, monitors heating and air conditioning, and has installed window films to reduce the energy that is typically allocated toward air conditioning. The Marriott also follows strict waste guidelines measuring and recording waste output four times a year. Of the waste produced by the hotel, more than 25% is recycled, reused or composted to further benefit the environment.

The Kimpton Hotel La Jolla is also a great contributor to the green movement. Offering beautiful views of the water and shores, the Kimpton hotel concentrates on doing its part to preserve the area. They use non-toxic pest control for their off-site gardens, 75% of which includes plants native to the region. They also follow exceptional standards in terms of energy efficiency and water conservation.
