Certified Periodontists in La Jolla are Specially Licensed, Skilled and Educated

A periodontist is a dentist that specializes in periodontics. Periodontics is the study of the structures that support the teeth and the diseases and conditions that affect them. There are several structures inside your mouth that support your teeth. The most obvious structure is your gums also known by their scientific name, gingiva. There are also the alveolar bones which are the ones that actually bear your teeth and the ones you see when you get your dental x-rays done. The cementum is the top layer of the root of each tooth which attaches your tooth to the bone via the periodontal ligament. Whenever you have issues with any of these parts of your mouth, a periodontist should be the one to assess and treat the problem. If left untreated infections and tooth loss are likely to occur.

If you are not sure if your tooth or mouth ailment requires you to visit a periodontist ask your general dentist and they can evaluate your need. As with any healthcare professional, if your dentist suggests you seek out a periodontist you should take that recommendation seriously.

The Special Education & Skills obtained by the Certified Periodontists in La Jolla

It's important to find a skilled and licensed periodontist. In order to become a periodontist in the United State, dentists are required to complete a minimum of three additional years of schooling on top of their dental degree. When they have completed their post graduate they are then deemed qualified for practice by the American Academy of Periodontology. Before allowing anyone to work on your teeth, you should check for proof of qualification. Typically these are hung on a visibly accessible wall. There are several qualified, certified periodontists in La Jolla and San Diego. Not all dentists in La Jolla are licensed periodontists but all licensed periodontists are dentists and many take on general patients as well. One local La Jolla Periodontist office that does both periodontics and dentistry is Scripps Center for Dental Care. And another respected and highly regarded local periodontist is Alex Avanessian.

As a society we are lucky enough to have readily available dental care within a five minute drive of our homes and specialists, like periodontists, trained to prevent or fix specific problems before they become irreversible. With the internet it's ever easier to find a qualified professional dental care expert. Don't let your teeth go uncleansed and uncared for.
