What is Endodontics and Who are Some Top Local Root Canal Dental Specialists?

Endodontists are dentists who are specially training in the science of endodontics. Endodontics is the study, care and treatment of dental pulp. Dental pulp is the inner most part of the tooth that contains the nerves and the roots. When this part of the tooth become infected, diseased, or otherwise compromised, an endodonitist is the one to administer treatment. They are commonly responsible for procedures such as root canals, fixing cracked teeth, oral surgery where the integrity of the dental pulp is questionable, and treating dental trauma.

In order to be a certified endodontist in the United States, a dentist must complete an additional two to three years of post-graduate training and pass the American Board of Endodontology examination. Upon successful completion they are legally allowed to practice endodontics in the US.

When selecting an endodontist to do your root canal or fix a broken tooth, you should always confirm that they are certified by the American Board of Endodontology. If you are unsure if you need to be treated by an endodontist call your dentist office with your list of symptoms
