Choosing A Pediatric Dentist In La Jolla

At around three to five months years old, your baby will start a life-long ritual in personal hygiene: cleaning his or her teeth. Actually, to be more specific, it'll be your ritual at first. This is a daunting thought for new parents to start thinking about a dental plan when their newborn baby still has a mouth full of gums, but the moment comes faster than anybody expects it. So what happens when you need to start thinking about a dentist? Here to give us some insight into the matter of dental care for children, we spoke to Doctor Nick Marongiu from the Scripps Center For Dental Care.

In general, your child's first visit to the dentist should be by age 1 or within 6 months of his or her first tooth, says Doctor Marongiu. This isn't going to be a long, invasive procedure or anything you need to worry about. As a parent, you will need to come prepared to fill out a medical history form for your child to aid the dentist in completing an evaluation. The exam itself is typically short and involves little to no treatment. This early visit gives your child a chance to meet the dentist and get comfortable with dental and oral healthcare, and allows early detection of possible dental problems with the teeth, gums, jaw, or other oral tissues. Early detection, as with all healthcare, is critical to produce the best overall prognosis and health.

Are There La Jolla Dentists That Specialize In Children's Teeth?

When searching for a dentist for your child, you can start by asking your regular dentist for a recommendation, advises Doctor Marongiu. Some general dentists do see children, however, pediatric dentists receive a minimum of two additional years of residency to specialize their skills to meet the needs of children's dental and oral healthcare. Additionally, most pediatric offices are designed for children, so the pediatric dentist, the staff, and the decor are set to put the children at ease.
