Finding the Right Church after a Move

There are many things to think about when you first move to a new city and finding a church may be close to the top of your list. Many of us consider our church to be like a second family, so leaving one church and finding another can be challenging. Here are a few tips to help you find the right La Jolla church for your family after you have moved.

  • Start with an Internet Search
Searching for the denomination you're looking for along with the name of your city will likely give you several results. The locations of several local churches will probably appear immediately, along with links to their websites. It's best to visit a couple of the websites to get a feel for how large the congregations are and what kinds of services they offer. The times that their services start will also be listed on their websites. A great place to start is http://www.lajollabluebook.com/category/churches.

  • Listen to Sermons
Many churches have audio of sermons available on their websites, and some have videos posted as well. This will give you an idea of the content and delivery of the sermons, as well as the music and other aspects of teaching at each particular church.

  • Visit a Few Churches
In the end, there is no substitute for actually attending services. The feel of a church is very important, and you won't know how well the congregation suits you and your family until you actually visit. Try to avoid making rash judgments. It's best to attend services every week for a month before deciding that the church is not right for you.

  • Talk to Neighbors and Church Members
Most people are happy to talk about the churches they attend, and they are likely to give a more balanced view than each church's welcoming committee. Asking about churches is also a good way to meet your neighbors. The conversation will likely expand to local grocery stores, eateries and other information that you wouldn't learn from a real estate agent.

Although finding a new church may be overwhelming at first, with the right mindset and willingness to do a bit of research, you can find the ideal church in La Jolla for yourself and your family.
