History of Faith in La Jolla, CA

La Jolla is very well known for being one of San Diego's most affluent neighborhoods. In addition to its riches, beautiful scenery, and amazing shopping opportunities, the neighborhood also has a reputation for welcoming many different faiths. This includes many different denominations of Christianity as well as other religions.

The people of La Jolla have been predominately Christian since California became a state in 1850. Prior to this, the area was still owned by Mexico. This has created a very strong connection with the Catholic religion within the neighborhood, and is believed to be responsible for the various Catholic places of worship found within it.

However, Catholicism is not the only form of Christianity that can be easily found in La Jolla. There are many protestant churches that are also open in the area. This includes Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian places of worship. There are also several smaller churches in La Jolla for many other various forms of the protestant faith which gives those in the community even more options to worship in the way that they prefer.

Despite past antisemitic policies in La Jolla during the neighborhood's birth in the late 1800's, the area now posses a thriving Jewish population. The attitude towards the neighborhood's Jewish members has rapidly shifted from rejection in the 1940's to acceptance and tolerance today. La Jolla now contains four different synagogues, providing a variety of quality places of worship for those of Jewish faith in the area.

La Jolla also boasts many different independent churches that do not necessarily fit into a description of any of these traditional faiths. This ultimately means that regardless of your personal beliefs or philosophies, La Jolla can provide you with a place to worship and a community of open and accepting people who respect your personal religious preferences.
