Events for Book Lovers
Whether you're an old-fashioned reader or a new e-book reader, you'll find more than enough book-related events in La Jolla to keep you happily occupied for the whole summer. These events also include many special readings and programs for children of all ages.
As the oldest family-owned and operated independent bookstore in the country, Warwick's on Girard Avenue has been catering to book lovers in La Jolla for decades. Their ongoing events at the bookstore include weekends with local authors and special readings. They also co-sponsor readings at the La Jolla Riford Library.
Warwick's Weekend with Locals is an ongoing event that showcases local authors and their new books. Come in, chat with the authors and buy autographed copies from your favorite writers. Upcoming local authors for July include Susan Bernardo and Courtney Fletcher on July 14, Matt Coyle on July 21, Helen Foster James and Virginia Shin-Mui Loh on July 28, Brant Cooper on August 4, Maria Desiderata Montana on August 11, Kevin di Cicco on August 11 (at 2:30 p.m.), C.E. Poverman on August 18, Udo Wahn on August 24 and Eric Sage on August 25. All weekend events start at Noon unless otherwise noted.
Warwick's also holds at least two author readings every week. Most of these are held in the evening. For June, featured authors are Lily Koppel, "The Astronaut Wives Club" on June 22, Kristen Kittscher, "The Wig in the Window" on June 25, and Khaled Hosseini, "And the Mountains Echoed" on June 26. For July, featured authors are Charles Moss, M.D., "The Adaptation Diet" on July 1, Marjan Kamali, "Together Tea" on July 2, Ingrid Croce and James Clark, "Photographs and Memories" on July 9, Karen Slaughter, "Unseen" on July 10, Jincy Willett, "Amy Falls Down" on July 11, Chris Bohjalian, "The Light in the Ruins" on July 18, Bibi Kasrai, "The Spice Whisperer" on July 23 and Meg Waite Clayton, "The Wednesday Daughters" on July 24. On the second Tuesday of every month at 10 a.m., Warwick's also hosts Coffee with a Bookseller. The event is free and offers book lovers a chance to learn about new books, receive a 20% discount on any books discussed and enjoy treats and coffee from the local Brick & Bell Cafe.
In conjunction with the La Jolla/Riford Public Library, Warwick's co-hosts additional author readings. These are held at the library on Draper Avenue. Upcoming readings include Walter Walker, "Crime of Privilege" on June 25 at 7 p.m. and Karen Slaughter, "Unseen" on July 10 at7 p.m.
And what better location than the library for enjoying even more author events? On Saturday, July 13 at Noon, the library will host "An Afternoon of True Crime" featuring true crime writers Caitlin Rother, Tom Basinski and Cathy Scott. On Tuesday, July 30 at 6:30 p.m., long-distance swimmer Lynne Cox will discuss her new book, "Open Water Swimming Manual."
The library also hosts a book club on the second Wednesday of every month at 1:30 p.m. For the July 10 meeting, the group will discuss "House of Silk: A Sherlock Holmes Novel" by Anthony Horowitz. And for children, the library holds a preschool story time every Thursday at10:30 a.m. On Wednesday, June 26 at 4 p.m., the library will kick off its summer reading program for children with a musical performance.
