Rafael Peralta, USMC, who was awarded the Navy Cross for making the ultimate sacrifice in saving the lives of fellow Marines, will be honored; the keynote speaker will be BGen James Bierman, Commanding General of the Marine Corps Recruit Depot. Don’t miss this exciting opportunity to honor our local vets!

Expect the deck to be packed with inspiring events and fun activities that honor and remember our heroes as we celebrate our military heritage! From classic rock concerts featuring former members of Journey and Boston to vintage aircraft flyovers to meet and greets with legendary Navy pilots, there’s something for every member of the family to
Highlights include the American Freedom
Festival which will be on Saturday May 24 – former band members from Santana, Journey, Boston, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Steppenwolf will be playing all their old hits! Then donate to the San Diego Blood Bank Drive (May 26 10 a.m.-4p.m) and get free admission to the museum. Meet the Aviators and aircraft they flew on May 25-26; listen firsthand to the pilots that flew the planes on the Midway.

Cruise San Diego Harbor on the Hornblower

Where to Celebrate Memorial Day 2014 in San DiegoEnjoy 1- and 2-hour harbor cruises throughout the weekend narrated with information about more than 50 different San Diego landmarks! Cruise 13 miles along the Big Bay in San Diego and take a look at several different species of marine animals and seabirds. A snack bar will be provided, complete with adult beverages, soft drinks, hot and cold snacks, and souvenirs. These are perfect if you have family or friends in town who want a truly unique San Diego experience! Tours leave several times daily starting at 10am and tickets are $24 per person. Kick off Memorial Day weekend at an inspirational ceremony onboard the USS Midway!

Where to Celebrate Memorial Day 2014 in San Diego

This year, the ceremony will honor the Greatest Generation by commemorating the 70th Anniversary the D-Day landings at Normandy. Special Guest Speaker, Hon. Axel Cruau, Consul General of France in Los Angeles, will reflect on what the sacrifices of so many Americans in uniform meant to the people of France. The ceremony is free to the general public. Those in attendance will be granted free admission to the Midawy following the festivities. The wreath ceremony begins at 9am on Saturday May 24th. Celebrations and other activities will continue throughout the day aboard the USS Midway.
