According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Day was first declared in 1954 by President Dwight Eisenhower to honor all soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who served the nation. San Diego alone is home to more than 260,000 veterans and has the second largest veteran population in the state. Join the rest of the country in honoring our nation’s vets at these Veteran’s Day 2016 events in San Diego.
The USS Midway
The USS Midway will offer free admission for veterans and their families all day long on November 11. The museum will host the Veterans Day Parade along Harbor Drive starting at 11am, and The San Diego Blood Bank will hold a blood drive on Navy Pier until 3pm. There will be live entertainment and plenty of activities for the kids.
NBC 7’s “Salute to Service” Festival
The Salute to Service Festival will be held in conjunction with Veteran’s Day festivities on the USS Midway. Celebrate America’s veterans with live music and entertainment, free food and drink available on board the USS Midway, and kids’ activities including face painting, balloon animals, and a bouncy house.
Mt. Soledad Veterans Ceremony
The Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial will host a Veterans Day ceremony starting at 2pm. The event will include a special plaque presentation for Ted Williams, the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame baseball star and WWII and Korean War pilot. The commemorating speaker will be Dick Enberg, followed by Key Speaker Lt. General Craparotta.
The Veterans Museum at Balboa Park
The museum will celebrate the San Diego Veterans Day Parade and host a large private military ceremony in the morning. It will open to the public starting at 12pm on Veterans Day so visitors can enjoy the memorabilia from all branches of service.
Solana Beach Veterans Day Ceremony
Join North County for a Veterans Day Ceremony at La Colonia Park in Solana Beach from 11am-noon on Friday. Some highlights of the ceremony include the Camp Pendleton Young Marines as Color Guard, “Feathers from Heaven” Doves, the Santa Fe Christian School Band, and a special guest speaker who will address the community. City dignitaries and representatives from all branches of the Armed Forces will also be present. Light refreshments will be served.
Del Mar Veterans Day Salute
As Bing Crosby racing season begins in Del Mar, the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will also host the Veterans Day Salute on Nov. 11. The event includes racetrack admission, a barbecue, drink specials and live music after the races from country music artist Coffey Anderson.
