Upcoming Athenaeum Exhibitions Celebrate Sculpture & California Heritage

The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library will be showcasing several exciting new artists’ exhibitions this September: Galia Linn, in the Joseph Clayes III Gallery, and Roberta Allen, in the Rotunda Gallery. Both artists will lead a gallery walk-through on Saturday, September 24 at 11am.

GALIA LINN: INSIDE

September 24-November 5, 2016
Opening Reception: Friday, September 23, 6:30-8:30 PM
Gallery Walk-Through: Saturday, September 24, 11 AM

Galia Linn is a sculptor and site-specific installation artist currently living and working in Los Angeles. She will be creating an installation in both the Clayes Gallery and on the outside patio of the Athenaeum.

All of Linn’s sculptures tell a unique story, as they are all relics; objects that you might find in an excavation. Their purpose is at times clear and sometimes mysterious so you may find yourself creating your own narrative around their existence; the vessels in particular serve as metaphors for human beings and the bodies we currently inhabit. The outdoor installation of Inside is built specifically with the Athenaeum courtyard in mind. It evokes WABI SABI; the acceptance of transience and imperfection; opening a window into the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.

ROBERTA ALLEN: THINKING ABOUT THOUGHT

September 24-November 5, 2016
Opening Reception: Friday, September 23, 6:30-8:30 PM
Gallery Walk-Through: Saturday, September 24, 11 AM

Roberta Allen will present a series of drawings and a selection of artist’s books in the Athenaeum’s Rotunda Gallery. Language has been the inspiration for most of Allen’s conceptual art for many years. Her work, exhibited internationally, is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as many other public and private collections. The Athenaeum holds the complete collection of Allen’s artist’s books.

THE IANNELLIS IN CALIFORNIA: SELECTED WORKS

September 24-November 5, 2016
Opening Reception: Friday, September 23, 6:30-8:30 PM

In conjunction with the multi-site exhibition Irving Gill: New Architecture for a Great Country, the work of Alfosnso and Margaret Iannelli will be presented in the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library’s North Reading Room. Alfonso is already known to many San Diegans, as he created the sculptures on the exterior of The Golden West Hotel on G Street as well as the world-renowned band shell of Spreckels Organ Pavilion.

Both Margaret and Alfonso Iannelli were an important part of the flourishing creative community in early 20th century Southern California. They produced works of painting, graphic design, and fashion, as well as architectural collaborations, including several with our very own Irving Gill.
