The La Jolla Music Society officially has a new home in the works! Slated to open early 2018, construction has already begun on the empty lot at 7600 Fay Avenue (directly across from The Lot). Known affectionately as “The Conrad,” the state-of-the-art Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center will boast a beautiful 43,693-square-foot facility, including a 500-seat concert hall, unmatched world-class acoustics, a cabaret space, and a multitude of other rehearsal rooms.
The building’s design has already been a year in the making. La Jolla Music Society underwent an intensive selection process to find the perfect architectural fit; a firm that could create a distinctive, beautiful performing arts center with visible roots in La Jolla. EPSTEIN JOSLIN Architects, Inc., from Cambridge, Massachusetts, were selected from a field of 15 firms.
Renowned for their work on such spaces as the Shalin Liu Performance Center in Massachusetts and the Boston Symphony’s Seiji Ozawa Hall, the firm has a deep understanding of how a venue can enhance a performance experience. Though The Conrad will max out at nearly 44,000-square-feet, it’s aesthetically designed to keep the relationship between the audience and the performers as intimate and direct as possible.
The ideal sound environment – be it for a concert hall, a recording studio or other facility – fundamentally depends on three variables: room acoustics, sound system and quietness. The Conrad aims to be known first and foremost as a music hall, internationally recognized for its excellent acoustics. To that end, La Jolla Music Society engaged Yasuhisa Toyota, president of Nagata Acoustics America to develop a concert hall that will be acoustically exceptional. With offices in Tokyo, Los Angeles and Paris, Nagata Acoustics has worked on a number of important concert venues – from the Walt Disney Concert Hall to Tokyo’s Suntory Hall and Kyoto Concert Hall in Japan.
In addition to a beautiful exterior and interior, The Conrad will bring world-class performances to the community and act as the new permanent home of the Music Society. In addition to holding world-class performances, the new home of the LJMS will be renting available spaces for educational performances, corporate conferences, weddings or other uses by individuals, schools and organizations, making it a truly multifaceted community venue.
Stay tuned for more updates on the brand new Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, including an official opening date, at ljms.org.
