4 Things to do in La Jolla Memorial Day Weekend

Aside from honoring the brave men and women of our armed services who served in times past to the present, La Jolla has a lot going on this Memorial Day weekend. And true to its friendly community, La Jolla has something to offer to people of all ages.

Escape to Margaritaville

2 p.m. Sunday at La Jolla Playhouse

The world premiere of “Escape to Margaritaville” carries on with its extended, successful run at La Jolla Playhouse this Memorial Day weekend. Envisage a locale where the sun is ever brightly shining, the ocean is warm like bath water, and the drinks are as frosty cold as they are abundant. This is Margaritaville, the veritable island utopia where people from the cities are able to escape from their humdrum lives and where the locals get into the type of conflict that they are able to sweet talk their way out of each and every time.

The new musical play features classic Jimmy Buffett tunes that are able to charm the Devil himself. The story follows a part-time barkeep and part-time singer on a Caribbean island who falls head over heels for an attractive tourist, a delightful lady who causes him to examine the life he believed he had all planned out. Playwrights Greg Garcia (“My Name Is Earl”, “Raising Hope”) and Mike O’Malley (“My Name Is Earl”, “Justified”, “Glee”) blend a story in the works for years with Buffett classics, under the direction of award-winning director Christopher Ashley. For those who are unable to make it this Sunday, take heart, because the musical continues until July 9th.

However, prior to hitting the beach, participants will be able to observe grunion hatch right before their eyes during a special presentation about this baffling fish.

Attendees should plan in advance for cool, wet conditions and bring a flashlight for the night grunion run. Minors are obligated to be present with a paid adult, for ages 6 plus. Please note that the Grunion run does not meet at Birch Aquarium. Pre-purchase tickets are required. Prices are $15 for Birch Aquarium members and $17 for non-members.
