A Day At Girard Gourmet’s Secret Garden – Part 2

Last week we were treated to a day of excellent company during an enlightening tour of Corgi Castle, the slice of paradise where Girard Gourmet owner, Francois Goedhuys, grows the fruit and vegetables served at his establishment. There was more to this experience than great hospitality, though. Our afternoon culminated in a very special lunch cooked by our host’s good friend, Michel Stroot, a man who also happens to be the former Executive Chef at the ‘Golden Door’ for over 25 years, as well as a contributing chef for the Tomorrow Project.

A Day At Girard Gourmet’s Secret Garden – Part 1

Girard Gourmet’s slogan “From Our Garden to Your Plate” took on a whole new meaning yesterday. We were treated to a very special tour of ‘Corgi Castle’, the mountainside property where the cafe and deli’s fresh fruit and vegetables are grown.

It’s located just outside Julian, a historical district 60 miles away from La Jolla, up in the hills – I’m sure some of you have probably tried the apple cider or pies, which is worth the hour and twenty minute drive alone. Although getting there doesn’t take all day, it feels like you’re covering a vast distance purely because of how the landscape, roads and weather changes. The parched hills are marked with boulders and pine-oak trees, which is a far stretch from the palmy shores of San Diego. There are definitive seasons, too, which serve as another stark contrast to conditions on the coastline; summer is hot and bright (no June Gloom to speak of), while winter has been known to bring a few inches of snow each year.

Friday’s Burrito Review: Ranchos Natural Food

Today’s burrito review comes courtesy of my vehicle’s blown radiator hose. After what had been a seriously frustrating morning, spent waiting for a tow truck to get me in Mission Bay, I got lunch in nearby Ocean Beach. I’d heard about Ranchos Natural Foods from a few people, but hadn’t been there yet to try it out for myself.

It’s a spacious restaurant on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, really close to the vibrant hub of Newport Avenue and only a two minute walk to the pier. At twelve o’ clock it was already busy, with a good crowd sitting in the shaded area outside. One of the unique things about Ranchos is the variety of vegetarian options, something I appreciated but also feel skeptical about. A lot of the time the vegetarian meals offered substandard, dull and unfilling.

Best Burgers in La Jolla

Nothing is better than the classic combination of a burger, fries and milk shake. Fortunately, today’s best burger joints, especially those in La Jolla, have evolved to feature fresh, organic ingredients, such as grass-fed, hormone-free beef and poultry and locally grown produce. You can now enjoy an old-fashioned favorite with a modern, healthy approach.

The Burger Lounge, located at the corner of Silverado Street and Herschel Avenue, always draws a crowd. With seating both indoors and outdoors, it is open daily for lunch and dinner. They offer several handcrafted burgers, including beef, turkey, and quinoa veggie. Burgers are served with organic white cheddar or American cheese, fresh or grilled onion, organic ketchup and the Burger Lounge’s own house-made 1000 Island dressing. The free range turkey burger is accompanied with fresh basil. Seasonal burgers are also available, such as spring lamb with asadero cheese, jalapeno relish, and tomatillo green chile mayonnaise. Other dishes include chicken tenders, gourmet salads, onion rings, french fries, milkshakes, desserts, beer and wine. Children’s meals are also available and you can even hire the Burger Mobile Lounge to cater your next party.

Jeff’s Burgers in La Jolla Shores is popular among locals and surfers as well as vacationers. Jeff’s Burgers serves four sizes of freshly-made hamburgers, from regular to jumbo. You can order the hamburgers alone or in several combination plates with fries, onion rings and drinks. Other side dishes include green, macaroni and potato salad. From Thursday to Sunday between 8 and 10 a.m., Jeff’s also serves breakfast, which includes eggs, omelets, egg sandwiches, breakfast burritos, pancakes, french toast, oatmeal, and fresh fruit.

Smashburger La Jolla, located on Prospect, offers your choice of several gourmet burgers or the option to build your own burger. All are smashed, seared and seasoned to order, using fresh 100% certified Angus beef. Their gourmet burgers include the San Diego (avocado, cilantro, pepper jack cheese, chipotle mayo), the Classic, the All American cheeseburger, Avocado Club, Spicy Baja, and Mushroom Swiss (vegetarian, with sautéed baby portabella mushrooms and aged Swiss cheese). Add-ons include bacon, chili, fried egg and guacamole.
