Tucked away in a corner shop on Ivanhoe street, you’ll find a quaint clothing boutique filled with pretty day dresses, tops, and skirts in bold prints and pastel hues. Swoon Collection swooped into town in December and has quickly established itself as a unique addition to the women’s boutiques in La Jolla. This trendy shop has everything a fashionista could possibly want: shoes, dresses, flowy tops and locally designed jewelry. La Jolla Blue Book stepped inside to chat with owner Kate Yetman to experience her trendy new La Jolla shopping destination. Continue reading
The community of La Jolla, CA offers some of the best shopping experiences in the world. With pristine store fronts and cobblestone paved sidewalks, La Jolla is known as having the most savvy styles and trends. In order to keep up with the demand for these fashion looks, Westfield UTC has gone under a massive renovation and expansion. With the convenience of shopping online and receiving packages a few days later, retail developers now have the task of making malls into a “destination experience” in order to attract shoppers. The Westfield UTC expansion will set the bar for a premier shopping destination.
Situated in an ideal location, Westfield UTC had its last revitalization in 1984 with the addition of Nordstroms. By the end of this year, the mall will look entirely new. The $1 billion dollar expansion project has included a brand new luxury Arclight cinemas, a polished food court, and a 24 hour fitness super sport. Other store openings include Rolex, J. Crew, Tiffany & Co., a Forever 21 anchor store, Splendid, Tesla Motos, Hanna Andersson, Kiehls, Diane’s Beachwear, The Art of Shaving, and White House|Black Market. Madewell, which recently just opened this past week has had a huge success. As sister store to J. Crew and known mainly for their denim, Madewell has attracted a large group of fans and now has two store locations in San Diego. New restaurant openings include Eureka!, Seasons 52, and Tender Greens. With much popularity and buzz surrounding UTC, the mall has attracted other retail stores as well. Set to open soon at the shopping destination are Lululemon Athletica, PIRCH, Michael Kors, Teavana, and Geppetto’s Toys.
Not only will you notice new stores at Westfield UTC, but you will also find it easier to shop and park at the mall. The master plan for the development includes an extra 3,000 parking spaces, 150 new stores, 3 new anchors, a high rise hotel, 300 condominiums, office space, 2,400 new jobs, and upgrades to existing stores. In total, the mall will grow from 4,500 parking spaces to 7,500, 150 stores to 300 stores, and expand from 1,066,842ft retail space to 1,816,842ft retail space (making it even larger than fashion valley and one of the largest in California). The entire mall has been renovated with the addition of lounge seating throughout, water features, and a fresh modern appeal. 70 stores will be redeveloped with tall facades, with what Westfield UTC calls “High Street” stores.
This summer, take a break and enjoy the new amenities found at Westfield UTC. Chances are, you will no longer have to drive down to Fashion Valley to find what you’re looking for. Indulge in fine shopping, gourmet La Jolla restaurants, and catch a summer flick. Let us know what your favorite additions are to Westfield UTC by commenting below.
It’s here – summer 2013 has finally arrived with a glorious summer solstice! But if you’ve been stuck in stuffy classes or a windowless office, perhaps you haven’t noticed the seasons changing – and I bet your wardrobe hasn’t transitioned either (I don’t care if this is California and you live in shorts and tees year round – you could still be wearing last season’s trends)!
This year’s summer trends aren’t exactly for the timid. Bold prints, bold colors, bold lacks of color – I’m talking blacks and whites! We’re slowly going back into the 90s, but if you think these looks are just for the trendy kids, you are mistaken. Anyone at any age can work the trends with their own personal aesthetic, and this can be done with several of the shops found in La Jolla.
First, the trends to look out for:
- Bold Prints: chevron, tropical, stripes, geometric shapes – the more
unusual, the better in my opinion!
- Blacks and Whites
- Classic Chambray
- Acid Wash
Capricon Boutique 5444 La Jolla Blvd. Ste B: If your style is more fresh with a slight boho twist, check out Capricorn boutique. Look for drapey striped cardigans, chambray tanks, comfy acid wash tees, and tie dye shorts for beach days.
Ralph Lauren 7830 Girard Ave.: For a classic look, you can’t go wrong with Ralph Lauren. Sailor motifs keep you on trend without being overbearing. I couldn’t get over the sailboat dress and the beach umbrella print tank top. Let’s also not forget the classic sailor striped tops!
La Donna Fashion Group 937 Silverado St.: For the more high-end fashion street styler, head to La Donna for bold prints in various styles. Large florals, colorful geometric patterns, and vibrant tie dyes can be found on many of the cocktail dresses, tops, skirts, and bottoms.
Y-3 7852 Girard Ave.: Not into high-end street fashion? What about funky and sporty street style? Y-3’s sportswear is all about black and white blocks and stripes as well as tropical floral prints. Miley Cyrus and It-Girl Cara Delevingne have both been styled in Y-3’s funky styles.
LF 7864 Girard Ave.: LF is like your trendy, big sister’s closet. You will find all things 90s here – flower-power hippie (Blossom), neon hip-hop (Fresh Prince of Bel Air), and acid wash all-American kid (even if you’re 35 and miss Beverly Hills 90210).
Pink Lagoon 1033 Silverado St.: For a feminine take on the boho look, check out Pink Lagoon. Their pastel boutique is filled with beautiful tie dyes, tropical screen printed tops, and floral printed dresses. Pink Lagoon is also known for styling, so if you need help with your wardrobe choices – hit up Pink Lagoon!
Mimi & Red 5630 La Jolla Blvd.: Very stylish Mimi and & Red is on point on with their trends! Tie dyes, chevron, and florals grace maxi and sun dresses – even jumpers! Pair any of their looks with an arm party (stacked bangles and leather wraps) and aviators and you’re set!

For fun coastal chic décor, check out The Faded Awning, where you can browse through an unusual collection of furniture, accessories, paintings, shells, garden items, and old signs. For Mother’s Day, you can enter a raffle here and a chance to win a $50 gift certificate.
Finally, if you want to encourage your inner artist, stop in at My Art Shed, which is giving away free family art lessons and other prizes on May 11. My Art Shed offers a variety of art classes for both children and adults. In addition, they offer special parties and seasonal camps for children and sell art supplies.
Did you know that fifteen out of twenty-two businesses in upper Girard are owned and operated by women? This is a recent discovery made by fellow business owner, Elizabeth Allen from Elizabeth Allen Atelier on upper Girard. She thought that this was rather interesting and decided that in an effort to draw attention to this end of the avenue, as well as celebrate these female entrepreneurs and women in general, to organize “women rule on upper Girard”!
Thirteen participating businesses will offer female shoppers a “treat” (discounts, raffle tickets, freebies!). One of the participating businesses is the Harvard Cookin’ Girl, which offers cooking classes for all ages and palettes. Owner and founder, Bibi Kasrai, started her business out of her home garage in 2009. Kasrai began her business as an after school enrichment curriculum program for school children. Kasrai successfully connected with the children by introducing them to fun and healthy meals. Her creative and fun way of teaching appealed to kids and parents alike which helped grow her business.
Kasrai’s success and growing demand allowed her to open up her current store-front on upper Girard in 2010. Kasrai recalls that back then, uppper Girad was a “ghost town”. But over the last couple of years she has seen it turn around with new businesses opening up and seeing more shoppers on her end of the street. This change can be attributed to the many female entrepreneurs that have opened up their businesses on upper Girard.
Harvard Cookin’ Girl also offers corporate cookery, birthday events, and fun camps year-round. Some of their popular cooking events include Iron Chef, Spontaneous Monday and Ethnic Foods cooking. Check out their Summer Camp series which starts June 17th and runs thru August 23rd for children between the ages of 4-13. Stop by the Harvard Cookin’ Girl during the “Women Rule on Upper Girard” event on May 11th for free cookies and enter their raffle for a chance to attend an iron chef competition!
Find yourself at upper Girard for this special event on Saturday, May 11th from 12pm to 5pm on upper Girard Avenue in La Jolla.
