Summer Jazz Series at the La Jolla Athenaeum Begins June 4

The Athenaeum’s jazz program continues with the annual summer series starting June 4! Farrell Family Jazz at the La Jolla Athenaeum features an international piano series by four acclaimed jazz artists from the United States, Canada, Germany, and Cuba. All concerts will be held in the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Music Room of the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library at 7:30pm, and tickets are on sale now.

The Athenaeum’s “Flicks on the Bricks” Series is Back!

If this warm summer weather has left you wanting to spend as much time as you can outside, The La Jolla Athenaeum’s outdoor movie series, “Flicks on the Bricks,” is back for the seventh year! “Flicks on the Bricks” makes it possible for you to enjoy classic movies that you love while enjoying the beautiful summer night on the patio of the Athenaeum.

“Flicks on the Bricks” will start Thursday, August 1, and will be held every Thursday throughout the month of August. Movies start at 7:30 PM. Not only can you enjoy a perfect summer night with the classics, Barbara Baxter, creator of, will pair a wine with your show! Keep in mind that you must be 21 years or older to see the series.

The entire series is four movies, including The Big Sleep (1946), Rear Window (1954), Cinema Paridiso (1989), and The Big Easy (1986). You do not have to be a member of the Athenaeum to enjoy these classics; however, you do get discounted ticket prices if you are. For nonmembers, each show is $22. For members, each show is only $17. If you plan to see all four shows, you can purchase a series pass for $80 for nonmembers and $60 for members. OR watch the entire series for FREE! August 1-The Big Sleep is a 1940s classic starring Humphrey Bogart and tells the story of a private eye who is investigating the gambling debts of a young woman. It is sure to entertain a wide audience as it has blackmail, deception, violence, and a passionate romance. It will be paired with a Pinot Noir.



August 8-Hitchcock’s Rear Window stars the beautiful Grace Kelly whose character is engaged to a crippled photojournalist.They witness a brutal murder from their window and are determined to solve it. This film is sure to provide enough excitement and entertainment for anyone. Rear Window will be paired with vin français.



August 15-Cinema Paradiso is actually an Italian film and takes place right after World War II in a rural Italian town. A boy becomes fascinated by the new movie theater and starts an interesting friendship with the projectionist. It will have English subtitles. This film is partially sponsored by Cinema Little Italy and will be paired with vino italiano.



August 22-Last, The Big Easy stars Dennis Quaid who plays a New Orleans detective, with some corrupt habits. Ellen Barkin plays an assistant district attorney who is investigating corruption in the police force. This show will be paired with Big Easy Red Malbec and Bawdy Bubbles King Creole Surprise.
