Birch Aquarium Summer Events

Music and walks under the full moon. What could be better for ocean lovers on a warm summer evening? If you cannot get enough of La Jolla‘s aquatic life, then look into the Birch Aquarium’s special summer events. They are perfect for the whole family and for entertaining out-of-town visitors.

Starting Saturday, June 22, the aquarium is offering Full Moon Pier Walks throughout the summer. From 7 to 9:30 p.m., you can walk along the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, which is normally closed to the public. With a guide leading the way, you’ll have a chance to collect plankton, perform experiments and explore the nocturnal habits of marine life. You’ll also learn about the history of Scripps Oceanography and current research projects. Children ages 9-13 must be accompanied by an adult. You must purchase tickets in advance for the Full Moon Pier Walks, either by calling (858) 534-5771. They are $22 for Birch Aquarium members and $25 for the general public. Check the website for additional dates (close to or during the full moon each month).

Birch Aquarium is also offering their Green Flash Concert Series during the summer months. The music concerts will be held on the third Wednesday of each month from 6 to 9 .m. in June, July, August and September. They are staged on Birch Aquarium’s outdoor Tide-Pool Plaza overlooking the ocean, where you can hope to see the elusive “green flash” before the sun disappears into the horizon. The concert series includes a variety of performers, including Vicci Martinez & ZZ Ward, The Fixx, Matt Costa and Steve Polz. Tickets for the concerts are $29 if purchased in advance or $34 at the door. You can also purchase a season pass for $120. All ticket purchases include the concert, entrance to the aquarium exhibits and parking. You can also purchase appetizers, wine and craft beers. For ticket information, call (858) 534-4109.

As the public exploration center for Scripps Institute of Oceanography, Birch Aquarium has been entertaining and educating ocean enthusiasts since 1951. With over 60 exhibits, the aquarium welcomes more than 40,000 students annually and offers many programs for children, from summer camps to college internships. There are several additional summer activities for adults as well, including tidepooling, kayaking, snorkeling, grunion runs, whale watching and a “Perspective on Ocean Science” lecture series. You can also become a member of the aquarium and enjoy unlimited admission for one year, guest passes, discounts to the gift shop and café, and regular updates on all new events and exhibits.
