Be Fresh, La Jolla’s newest addition to the food scene, brings the traditional Mexican deli lunch to the heart of the Village. True to its name, it boasts a refreshing and light menu; nothing is cooked, fried, or greased, and all the vegetables and fruit are purchased fresh every morning. Owner Nancy Juarez, opened the lunch spot, located at 627 Pearl Street (at the old El Pescador location), in hopes of providing La Jolla with a Mexican fix without going the typical burrito or taco route, which can be a bit on the heavy side for a quick lunch. The Blue Book recently had the privilege of sampling Nine-Ten Restaurant’s summer three-course lunch menu. The three-course lunch runs at $24 and gives you a hearty salad, an entree and a delicious dessert, both sweet and savory.
Nine-Ten, located inside The Colonial Hotel, offers innovative California cuisine using the freshest local produce. The kitchen is led by award-winning Chef Jason Knibb who was recently named San Diego’s 2014 “Chef of the Year” by the California Restaurant Association. The casual yet elegant ambiance is excellent for any meal of the day. Here are a few of our favorites on the summer menu.

The Cottage is a favorite breakfast and lunch hangout with locals and tourists alike. Located in the heart of the village in a cozy white cottage at the corner of Fay and Kline, The Cottage stands out by it’s usual big and friendly crowd enjoying the patio which offers up the best outside dining in La Jolla that is also pet-friendly patio. Its California bistro cuisine makes the most of local, organic produce and other fresh ingredients and has earned it recognition as the best breakfast place in La Jolla by popular vote.
For breakfast, The Cottage opens at 7:30 a.m. and serves a variety of baked goods and egg dishes, including its own house granola, various omelettes and specialties such as Baja chicken hash, and it’s famous Stuffed French Toast.
Open for lunch, Sunday brunch, and dinner (Summer only) with an array of dishes to satisfy all. The lunch and dinner menu includes appetizers, soups, large salads, sandwiches, burgers, and several entrées such as Grilled Mahi Fish Tacos.
The Cottage is also a great place to take out-of-town guests or for special celebrations. The patio or inside dining area can be reserved for special occasions such as graduations, rehearsal dinner, or other events. Summer is here and that means dinner at The Cottage is now open!
