La Jolla is home to some of the best art galleries in San Diego, and UCSD has become an important and integral part of the art scene here. The Stuart Collection, which began in 1982, is spread throughout the expansive urban campus and includes several sculptures that date back to the 80s. Both indoor and outdoor, the collection’s visual art pieces are quirky, interactive, and integrate on-campus buildings, making it a pretty radical version of a typical sculpture garden. La Playa art gallery will be hosting a grand opening from 4-9pm this Saturday. Artists featured in the gallery will be in-house for the event along with wine and cheese. This is an intimate occasion for La Jolla patrons to meet with local artists and ask them questions about their style, inspiration and background face-to-face.
The gallery has been open on 2226 Avenida de la Playa by the Shores since May, servicing tourists and the summertime crowds. Now that this training period is over, La Playa is interested in showing off its gallery to the locals of La Jolla. Continue reading →
If you are a casualty of the Miramar Air Show’s government shutdown, do not fret! The La Jolla Playhouse is hosting a spectacular event this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You must check out the Without Walls Festival, a collaboration of theater groups from San Diego and around the world.
Live art by the food trucks, live music in the beer garden, live performances on the lawn and more fun activities are scattered across the south-end of UCSD’s campus in between Revelle and Muir.
As a project four years in the making, this event has been highly anticipated by the performing arts community. Assistant Director of Development at the Playhouse, Jill Kelly, could not be more excited about the festival’s role in the community.
“We are learning as we go. That’s what Irvine challenged us to do” Kelly said, referring to the Irvine Foundation’s grant which initiated the WoW project.
Last Saturday, I attended an intimate soiree of art and music at Moonglow Design owned local plumber and art enthusiast Mike Glancy. The small get together could be heard prominently around 8pm as I parked on an otherwise dark street in Bird Rock. I approached a moonlit deck full of friends and family enjoying a live Hawaiian soundtrack. Large, colorfully painted canvases were hung under canopies where the artists and food tables were patiently awaiting hungry observers. Continue reading →
