Catch an intimate vocal and piano performance in La Jolla at the opening of Society Cabaret this weekend, January 23rd and 24th at the newly renovated Forshaw Hall located on the property of the Congregational Church of La Jolla (no affiliation). We chatted with Founding Partner Paula Heitman, to learn more about Society Cabaret and what to expect on opening weekend.
What is Society Cabaret?
Society Cabaret originated in San Francisco and has been producing live entertainmnet for over a year at the Hotel Rex in the Union Square area. It is a partnership between long-time collaborators Tim Heitman, Christopher M. Nelson, G. Scott Lacy and Paula Heitman, who together share over 80 years of arts administrations, management, production and education in the arts between them.
Cabaret Society hopes to replicate their success in San Francisco right here in La Jolla. Why La Jolla? According to Paula this is because La Jolla has a “rich artistic culture and bringing something like this just fits right in, especially since there is nothing like it in the Village.”
Society Cabaret will be producing monthly cabaret evenings of live entertainment in La Jolla and will bring stars and regional entertainers for an intimate performance of storytelling through song. They also hope to eventually add food and cocktail service, but for now enjoy a nice dinner before the show at one of La Jolla restaurants or a nightcap after the show.
What is a Cabaret?
A cabaret is a 70-90 minute intimate vocal and piano performance. Cabaret breaks the “fourth wall.” In this case the singer narrates the performance by talking to the audience, giving them information about the show or telling a personal story that’s associated with the performance. Paula explains, “The magic that happens between audience and performer is such a wonderful thing to experience.”
Society Cabaret founding partner, Scott Lacy (previously played piano at the La Jolla Playhouse) will kick-off the opening weekend and will be at the piano along with Craig Noel Award Winner Sandy Campbell, on Friday January the 23rd, singing American Songbook and Musical Theatre Standards . On Saturday January 24th catch Broadway veteran (“13” and “Bye Bye Birdie”) and San Diego native Allie Trimm. Performances start at 8pm (doors open at 7pm). Be sure to stick around after the show and meet the performers!
