In 2010, American Express founded Small Business Saturday to help businesses with their most pressing need – getting more customers. The day encourages people to shop at small, local businesses on the Saturday after Thanksgiving; what began as a single day has grown into a powerful movement, and more people are taking part than ever before. This year, the big day is November 29!
The first-ever Small Business Saturday was held on Nov 27, 2010. It encouraged people across the country to support small, local businesses, and started a holiday shopping tradition. By 2011, more people had begun showing their support; from Washington, D.C., to Washington State, governors, mayors, senators, and even President Obama voiced their support for Small Business Saturday, and the US Senate officially recognized it as a national day. In 2012 American Express encouraged small business owners to take charge, helping them promote their business through free, personalized ads, which appeared millions of times across the web. More neighborhoods than ever celebrated Small Business Saturday last year, with individuals and local organizations pledging to support the day as Neighborhood Champions; as many as 1,450 neighborhood champions signed up to rally their communities.
Who’s participating in La Jolla? Tons of local businesses – including DG Wills, Hi Sweetheart, Everett Stunz, Meanley & Sons Hardware, SoCal Queen, Mitch’s Surf Shop, C& H Photo – to name a few. Shops will be sporting blue swag and Small Business Saturday paraphernalia outside to let you know they’re participating, so spend your Saturday shopping local, supporting La Jolla, and helping business grow in your community.
This year, it’s easier than ever to be a part of the movement. Visit the official website for a map of what businesses are participating in your area, and use social media (the #SmallBusinessSaturday hashtag on Twitter and Facebook) to get word out that you’re supporting the day. Take a photo next to your favorite small business and share it with friends and family!
