San Diego Weekend Events | Oct 21 – 23


Halloween is almost here! This weekend’s activities are already ramping up the ‘creep’ factor – from a Haunted Birch Aquarium to HauntFest on Main, there’s plenty to keep you busy. Here are our top San Diego weekend events! Be sure to check ticket availability and website info prior to attending any event.

Haunted Aquarium: Shipwrecked Science

When: Oct. 21-22; 6pm-9pm
Where: Birch Aquarium at Scripps
What: Enjoy close encounters with Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists and search the galleries for unusual underwater creatures rarely seen at Birch Aquarium! Discover a sea of glowing beasts (some using a special 3D microscope), make your own seaweed slime to take home, win prizes for dressing up in costume, do some creepy crafts, and enjoy shipwrecked ghost stories, all while BOO-gieing down to the live music of Billy Lee and the Swamp Critters. This is a great way for the whole family to enjoy Halloween! Recommended for ages 2+.

Borrego Days Desert Festival

When: Oct. 21-23
Where: Christmas Circle Community Park, Borrego Springs
What:  The whole family is invited for a weekend full of family fun in the beautiful desert town of Borrego Springs. Festivities kick off with the Parade at 10am, followed by a vintage plane flyover. Afterwards, check out artwork, retail vendors, and eats and drinks from local restaurants. There will be live entertainment throughout the day; a beer garden will be set up to quench your thirst in between activities! On Saturday there will be a Car Show starting at 11am, then Sunday will feature an off-road vehicle show – where quads, dirt bikes, off-road trucks and more will be showcased. The festival is free to enter.

Del Mar International Horse Show

When: Oct. 20-23
Where: Del Mar Fairgrounds
What: The Del Mar International Horse Show takes place at one of Southern California’s most well recognized horse show venues, the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Known for its incredible atmosphere and exciting competition, the Del Mar Int’l Horse Show encompasses multiple days of world-class show jumping and attracts an elite field of internationally recognized horses and riders. The competition is getting down to the wire as it heads into its final days, so don’t miss out on an incredible weekend of show jumping.

Harvest Festival Original Art & Craft Show

When: Oct. 21-23; 10am-6pm
Where: Del Mar Fairgrounds
What: Browse more than 24,000 handmade American art & crafts in hundreds of booths while you listen to all day entertainment at this year’s Harvest Festival. Each year features hundreds of artisans exhibiting American handmade items including beautiful jewelry, clothing, specialty foods, photography, original art, hand-turned wood, music, ceramics and much more. Enjoy three fun-packed days of shopping, stage and strolling entertainment, and festival food all for the price of one ticket (re-entry is permitted).

HauntFest on Main

When: Oct. 21; 5pm-9pm
Where: Downtown El Cajon (200 E Main St, El Cajon 92020)
What: Head to El Cajon for an outdoor family-friendly festival this weekend! Walk through the Promenade Pumpkin Patch to find the perfect pumpkin; wear your best costume to win fun prizes; stop by the Kidz Zone, featuring outdoor movies on a big screen; collect Halloween Candy on various ‘candy trails’ throughout the festival (there will be one candy trail for children as tall as 42 inches and shorter, other age groups can do the maze trail); and go on the Carnival Rides we all know and love, including a swing ride and bumper cars. There will be live music on two stages throughout the day.
