It may be mid-January, but you wouldn’t know it by looking at the weather outside; San Diego is beautiful year round, and there are plenty of events in the winter that prove it! We’ve rounded up our 5 favorite San Diego weekend events right here.
Poway Winter Festival
When: Friday Jan 9 – Saturday Jan 10, 4pm-9pm
Where: Poway Community Park; 13094 Civic Center Drive, Poway 92064
What: Experience the magic and charm of winter like never before! Feel snow between your fingers while sledding down snow hill, smell roasted marshmallows as you devour s’mores, ice skate around the synthetic ice rink, and peruse a variety of local vendors. The Winter Festival brings all of the appeal and entertainment of a cold-mountain town to Poway.

Where: San Diego Waterfront Park, 1600 Pacific Hwy, San Diego 92101
What: Keep those New Years Resolutions and start 2015 off right at the Fresh Start Healthy Lifestyle Fair in Downtown San Diego at the beautiful new Waterfront Park. This free event is open to all ages and offers information on Health, Fitness and Nutrition in a fun, fair atmosphere. The event features health screenings, fitness obstacle course, scavenger hunt, prizes and much more. Visit their website for more information and to register.
When: Saturday Jan 10, 9am-10pm
Where: 2080 Pan American Plaza, San Diego 92101
What: The local groups of the Horseless Carriage Club of America will commemorate the 1915 Road Race that was the opening event for the Panama-California Exposition. A living history show of the cars of the period will be presented in front of the San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park. Then at 10AM, the road-worthy cars will tour out of Balboa Park to the race venue in Point Loma where they will retrace the route of the race, returning to Balboa Park for the rest of the car show. This event is totally free!

Where: La Jolla Athenaeum, 1008 Wall Street, La Jolla 92037
What: The soundON Festival of Modern Music, presented by San Diego New Music and The Athenaeum, is an annual festival that showcases music by young and emerging composers alongside the visionary masters of the 20th century. The Festival will feature unconventional works in an informal and enjoyable setting at The Athenaeum, as well as a series of interactive workshops for younger music and art aficionados. Now in its 8th year, the soundON Festival has become an important fixture in the musical landscape of San Diego.
Family Drop-in Day: Exploring Post Impressionism
When: Sunday Jan 11, 1pm-3pm
Where: San Diego Museum of Art, 1450 El Prado, San Diego 92101
What: Offered every Sunday from 1:00 to 3:00 PM, Family Drop-In Days feature family friendly, docent-led tours, gallery games, and art projects for families to complete together. This week’s theme “Exploring Post-Impressionism;” use pre-made armatures and bases to quickly sculpt gestural dancers and horses in clay, inspired by the work of Edgar Degas. Experiment with additive sculpting technique and bring your sculpure to life! Bring the kids for a couple hours of artistic family fun.
