What: An apocalyptic music is one that entertains a terminal state of affairs, be that in connection with ideas, society, the planet, the person – whatever is of greatest importance to the mind shaping the musical artifice. It is music about fall, destruction, and sometimes, the hope of the establishment of a new order. Explore and listen to a variety of new-age apocalypse music with the SoundON Festival of Modern Music at the Athenaeum, which brings together an international roster of composers and performers for a four-day exploration of contemporary chamber music.

What: Tony Award-winner and Broadway superstar Idina Menzel (Wicked, Rent, Frozen, Glee) will reprise her critically-acclaimed performance as Elizabeth in If/Then, a role and a Broadway musical written specifically for her. This new musical, with unforgettable songs and a deeply moving story, follows two distinct storylines in the life of Elizabeth, a city planner who moves back to New York to restart her life in that city of infinite possibilities. When her carefully designed plans collide with the whims of fate, Elizabeth’s life splits into two parallel paths.

What: Experience the magic and charm of winter like never before! Head to the Winter Festival on Friday, Jan 8 from 5-9pm and Saturday, Jan 9 from 3:30-8:30pm at Poway Community Park. Feel snow between your fingers while sledding down the snow hill; smell roasting marshmallows as you devour delicious s’mores; experience the wind in your hair skating around the synthetic ice rink; and peruse a variety of vendors and their sensational products.

Where: Jacobs Music Center; 750 B Street, San Diego
What: San Diego Symphony’s month-long festival offers a rare chance to explore the personal connection to piano music that we all share; teachers, amateurs, students, professionals and those who simply love the incredibly diverse world of keyboard music. San Diegans of all ages will have the opportunity to hear the full range of piano music – sonatas and solo pieces, piano duos, concertos for one (or three!) pianos, chamber music, orchestral scores and new works – including a new concerto by multi-talented singer-songwriter Ben Folds.
When: Saturday Jan 9, 1pm
Where: Coronado Tidelands Park; 2000 Mullinix Drive, Coronado
What: Head to Coronado to see hundreds of kites fill the sky for the 2nd annual CRY San Diego’s Color the Sky Kite Festival. Enjoy music by DJ ManJU and delicious Indian food and snacks (available for purchase). Tickets are $15 day of. Kites and thread are included with registration while supplies last. All proceeds go to Child Rights & You (CRY) San Diego.
