December in San Diego wouldn’t be the same without the beloved traditional events that happen every holiday season. From three different parades to chili cook-offs and holiday book sales, we’ve put together an Event Guide with all the essentials in San Diego this weekend. Don’t miss any of these San Diego weekend events!

1. 39th Annual Coronado Christmas Parade

When: Friday Dec 5, 3pm-8pm
Where: Coronado Island
What: Watch Santa Claus arriving by ferry across San Diego Bay and a Snow Mountain play area at the Coronado Ferry Landing. Afterwards, a colorful holiday parade and Merchants Open House takes place along Orange Avenue, followed by the traditional tree lighting of a 50-foot Christmas tree and a free community concert in Rotary Park at the end of the evening.

2. Balboa Park December Nights

When: Friday Dec 5 & Saturday Dec 6, 5pm-9pm
Where: Balboa Park, 1549 El Prado, San Diego 92101
What: The annual Balboa Park December Nights will take place for the 36th consecutive year on the weekend of December 5 and 6, during which participating Balboa Park museums will open their doors free of charge from 5pm – 9pm both nights. Bring the family for a fun filled holiday weekend with food, shopping and lots more!

3. Holiday Book Sale at the Athenaeum

When: Saturday Dec 6, 10am-5:30pm
Where: Athenaeum, 1008 Wall St., La Jolla
What: Over the last few years it has become a tradition at the Athenaeum to set up a holiday bookstore in the La Jolla Studio during the school hiatus from just after Thanksgiving to the New Year. Members and visitors alike have enjoyed browsing among art, literature, music, history books, among others, and vinyl records and CDs. A couple of Athenaeum artisans have also had jewelry and artwork, including one-of-a-kind cards, on sale.

san diego weekend events4. 51st Annual North Park Toyland Parade

When: Saturday Dec 6, 11am-4:30pm
Where: University Ave., North Park
What: The historic neighborhood of North Park is hosting its annual Toyland parade. Gliding down University Avenue between Utah and Iowa Streets, this cheerful parade will feel like a Winter Wonderland; melodious marching bands, upbeat dance groups, cool vintage cars, beauty queens, and more will take to the streets. The parade will be from 11am-1pm and the festival is from 10am-4:30pm.

5. La Jolla Christmas Parade & Holiday Festival

When: Sunday Dec 7, 1:30pm-5pm
Where: Streets of La Jolla
What: The annual La Jolla Christmas Parade is back for its 57th year! The streets of La Jolla will come alive with floats, marching bands, community groups, drill teams, vintage vehicles, horses, and more will grace the town. Guests will enjoy arts & crafts, delicious cuisine, and entertainment during the Holiday Festival (3:30-5pm).

6. SoNo Fest & Chili Cook-Off in North Park

When: Sunday Dec 7, 11am-5pm
Where: 32nd & Thorn St., between Herman and Bancroft, North Park
What: This family-friendly festival will feature delicious craft beer, shopping, live music, a kid zone, and of course – a lot of chili. Purchase a beautiful, hand-blown chili bowl you keep for $20 with restaurant chili tastings from the best restaurants in North & South Park.
