It’s the last weekend before Christmas – in between all that last-minute holiday shopping, check out these great events happening in San Diego all weekend long. From an epic lightsaber battle downtown at the waterfront to the last few performances of the California Ballet’s The Nutcracker, here are our top 5 San Diego weekend events!
When: Sunday Dec 20, 5:30pm-8pm
Where: San Diego Bay
What: The San Diego Bay Parade of Lights returns for its second and final weekend on the 20th! More than 80 boats will be lavishly decorated to this year’s theme, “Christmas Around the World.” The parade will proceed from Shelter Island past Harbor Island, the Embarcadero, Seaport Village, and the Ferry Landing in Coronado The best spots to watch from land are the north and south ends of the Embarcadero, the pathway along Coronado, and the park behind Seaport Village

Where: San Diego Civic Theater; 1100 3rd Avenue, San Diego 92101
What: It just isn’t the holidays without The Nutcracker, presented by California Ballet Company this December at the San Diego Civic Theatre. The spectacular Tchaikovsky score will be brought to life by a live symphony orchestra at every performance. Gather your friends and family for one of the finest holiday traditions San Diego has to offer for its last weekend. The San Diego Symphony will be accompanying these last performances. Prices vary. When: Saturday Dec 19, 8pm-10pm
Where: Embarcadero Marina Park North
What: Join San Diego for a massive battle of Jedi vs. Sith on Star Wars Episode VII opening weekend. Pick a side of the force and use that venerable, ancient, glowing tool in the ultimate nocturnal showdown. Past battles in New York and Toronto have gathered more than 2000 warriors, and we can expect even more in San Diego this year! For every $10 you contribute, they will reserve one lightsaber for you; once they sell out, participants are welcome to buy their own and join in the fun – the event is totally free!

Where: The San Diego Zoo; 2920 Zoo Drive, San Diego 92101
What: Twinkling lights, festive foods, and merry performances transform the Zoo into a wild, glowing wonderland all through December. Ride the Twinkle Lights Trolley to tour an array of animal light sculptures, enjoy jingly, jazzy carols, acrobatic trampoline elves, and more. Jungle Bells holds holiday cheer for all! Jungle Bells activities are included with your admission or membership unless otherwise noted.

Where: Birch Aquarium at Scripps; 2300 Expedition Way, La Jolla 92037
What: Embark on an unforgettable journey with the ocean experts at the Birch Aquarium! Witness the longest mammal migration in the world, when approximately 20,000 gray whales pass San Diego on their annual 10,000-mile round-trip journey from the Bering Sea to the lagoons of Baja California. 9:30 a.m.–1:15 p.m. & 1:30–5 p.m. daily.
