Attention, breakfast lovers! Richard Walker’s Pancake House, whose only other California location is in downtown San Diego, has opened up a brand new restaurant at 909 Prospect Street in the village! The official grand opening will be on Monday, May 12, but the popular breakfast and brunch place is already serving some very satisfied customers. The La Jolla Blue Book spent a few minutes speaking with the owner, Richard Walker (son of the founder and company’s namesake), about the newest addition to their restaurant family.
The first and certainly most noticeable feature upon entering the restaurant is the bold, beautifully displayed stained glass that adorns most of the walls and takes the place of regular windows. “All of it is authentic blown glass,” Walker remarked. “It’s a special feature we like to include in all of our restaurants, but we had more space to work with here so there are quite a few more pieces. We love the unique, high-quality feel it gives to the restaurants.”
Richard Walker’s is kid-friendly, pet-friendly, and gluten-free friendly. The restaurant’s location has a patio outside that’s perfect for warm mornings with a dog in tow, and the regular menu has a “Kid’s Corner” section full of goodies for the little ones. Most pancakes and bread items on the menu can be prepared gluten-free; they even have a gluten-free and peanut-free pancake available with any topping of your choice. It’s safe to say they aim to accommodate!
The Richard Walker restaurants were originally founded in Illinois in 1960 by the first Richard Walker; since then, they’ve opened up a total of four locations – two in Illinois and now two in San Diego. The menu offers a wide range of brunch and breakfast-y items, including the classic brunch favorites: fresh Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s. When asked about the favorite and most-ordered menu item, Walker answered immediately – their famous apple pancake, which takes an additional 20 minutes of cooking time. Other menu items include crepes, Eggs Benedict, griddle cakes, waffles, French toast, and omelettes – but they’ll make pretty much anything you request!
Papers were signed in December, renovations began in January, and the transformation into the youngest Richard Walker’s newest brainchild was completed just a few weeks ago. Walker intends to focus solely on this particular restaurant for the next few months; he currently lives in San Diego and plans on being on-site every day. Designing, creating, and opening his own project has been a dream of Walker’s since before he was in the business – he was an employee at the prestigious Ernst & Young law firm for 12 years, and during that time managed to save up enough to start the blueprints for a new restaurant. He has plans to expand upwards along the western coast and eventually open more locations.
