Remembering Richard L. Levin Owner of La Jolla Blue Book
Our Blue Book family is saddened to reflect on the October 2012 passing of our leader, Richard Levin, of nearly 30 years. This being our first publication since 1984 without Rick setting the course, we’d like to take this opportunity to honor his accomplishments and highlight our path forward.
After purchasing Blue Book in 1984, Rick pledged to provide an easy to use, easy to find local resource for the La Jolla community. With his commitment to excellence and service to the community, Blue Book became a trusted neighborhood resource with the most reliable, up-to-date and thorough information. And in short order, Blue Book developed into La Jolla’s “bible” and a great champion for local businesses. Rick was loved by many for his honesty, loyalty, character, optimism and devotion to his friends and family. He loved his wife and 4 children, and devoted so much of his effort to supporting their desires. Rick pledged to coach and sponsor the sports teams for all his children, and as a result, he spent nearly two decades coaching La Jolla youth soccer, baseball and softball teams all of which were sponsored by La Jolla Blue Book.
In order to be so involved, Rick would arrive to work before 5 a.m. for nearly his entire professional career. There were only two things that could rival his passion for Blue Book and his family, and those were his love for jogging and Notre Dame football. Rick began jogging in the 1960s before almost anyone had ever heard of running for fun. And his passion for fitness continued throughout his life as he could be seen running along Mission Beach almost daily for 30 years. Adorned with Notre Dame or University of Virginia Law School cut off sweatshirts, there was nothing he loved more than running along the coast.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Susan; daughter Stacey, and his three sons, Jon, Scott and Brett. He will forever be missed dearly by all of those who knew him and the entire La Jolla Blue Book community who owes him a great gratitude for his 30 years of service.
Beyond honoring my father, as the new Publisher of the Blue Book, I also wish to shine a light on our exciting path forward. At Blue Book, we promise to remain an upstanding ambassador to the La Jolla community and to be loyal to the beat and flavor of the community we are blessed to live in and serve.
Scott F. Levin
