Although we’re experiencing one of the largest droughts in the history of California, rain is bound to fall! That said, we wanted to prepare our readers for the (hopefully) upcoming days when the weather chooses not to cooperate with your plans for fun in the sun. Check out our favorite indoor activities in La Jolla, ideal for individuals of all ages.
For history buffs or those who just love to see and learn interesting things, consider the Map and Atlas Museum of La Jolla. This museum houses the largest privately held collection of rare maps, including some dating back to before the age of exploration. It is organized by geographical regions, allowing you to take a virtual trip around the world without ever leaving our waterfront community! Because of the museums central location, visitors can easily head over to Fay and Prospect Streets for a meal or happy hour, a great way to take advantage of a rainy day. Those of you who enjoy the arts might want to spend some time in the Colosseum Fine Arts with its exhibitions which highlight various types of art from around the world. From the works of great masters to those of more modern artists, there is something for all art enthusiasts to enjoy. Want to continue the fun? Just up the street, located on the UC San Diego Campus is the La Jolla Playhouse, a top venue for the performing arts. Their seasonal schedule ensures a great choice of plays no matter what time of year you visit.
Need to burn off some extra energy? There’s no better place to visit on a rainy day than the La Jolla Recreation Center. This public facility welcomes community residents and visitors, and features all kinds of family-friendly activities including handball, basketball and shuffleboard, and you can also find tennis courts and a play area just for children. Finally, one of our favorite destinations in La Jolla is the Birch Aquarium. Located on a scenic bluff high above the Pacific Ocean, the aquarium features fish and sea creatures in over 60 indoor habitats from the warm waters of the Caribbean to the waters of the frigid Pacific Northwest. And because the entire aquarium is indoors, you can stay safe from the rain and the cold. Don’t forget to stop by their interactive museum which features all the latest research on ocean science, earth science and climate.
Whatever the season or the weather, you will find plenty of fun and interesting things for you and your family to do in La Jolla, CA! What do you like to do? Share your favorite rainy day activities with us by commenting below.
