6 Hot Spots to Celebrate National Tequila Day in San Diego

National Tequila Day is this Thursday, July 24! Restaurants throughout San Diego will be featuring specialty tequila cocktails and discounts on their tasty Mexican cuisine, and some are even providing pairing and tasting suggestions. Check out these six local spots to take advantage of this unique and festive holiday – and remember to drink responsibly!

1. The Patio on Lamont Street

national tequila day Attention foodies! The Patio will be whipping up a five course tequila-paired menu hosted by special guest Sergio Mendoza of Don Fulano Tequila. The summer melon-inspired dinner starts at 6:30pm on Wednesday July 23, and 6:30pm on Thursday July 24 at their 4020 Goldfinch Street location. Tickets are $75 per person. The 5 extravagant courses will include a variety of delicious fare, including chilled honeydew soup, fried soft shell crab, and agave-smoked duck breast. Rare tequilas, summer fruit, and perfectly paired cuisine – sounds like a great way to spend a Thursday.

2. El Agave Restaurant & Tequileria

national tequila day El Agave’s two locations boast an impressive display of one of the biggest tequila collections in the United States: with more than 2,000 different brands to choose from, including their own house-made, award-winning Tequila Agave Artesanal, there’s definitely a flavor for everyone. Agave’s cuisine is authentic Mexican food and includes items like sopecitos, taquitos, and mole. Their sangria and house margaritas are on par, but if you’re feeling particularly adventurous, ask for the Old Town Pink Guava Margarita!

3. La Puerta

With over 100 bottles in their collection, ranging from small batch distillers to more recognizable names, all of La Puerta’s tequilas are made of 100% blue agave and most hail from Jalisco, Mexico – the birthplace of tequila. There are 31 choices of blanco, 31 selections of reposado, 31 choices of anejo, 13 varieties of extra anejo, and nine selections of mezcal. That is some serious tequila! One of their house specialties and a must-try this Tequila Thursday is dubbed “Bark at the Moon,” and consists of Dos Lunas Reposado, muddled serrano, fresh lime, and pure agave nectar.

Puesto’s brand new bar/lounge area in La Jolla includes a stunning new cocktail list that includes most of the city’s finest mezcal and tequila cocktails. The Puesto Perfect Margarita is the closest thing you’ll find to a classic margarita in the village. The Burro Blanco is a quenching variation of the Moscow Mule with tequila blanco instead of vodka or gin. La Verdad, made with cactus juice and tequila blanco, is smooth and crisp and a perfect addition to your National Tequila Day festivities. 

5. Uptown Tavern

Hillcrest, CA 92103

This hot spot is mixing it up this year with some crazy and colorful concoctions; their Jalapeño Margarita has Herradura Silver tequila, fresh lime, fresh orange, citronage, and of course, spicy jalapeños. Or give their Bucking Burro a try – a variation of the traditional Moscow Mule with Herradura Silver tequila, orange juice, and lime juice. Talk about drinks with a kick! They’ll also be serving their normal dinner and Happy Hour fare, including flatbreads and chicken wings. 

6. Avenue

national tequila dayAvenue in Pacific Beach boasts a slew of mixologist-created craft cocktails, fresh squeezed juices, and custom flavors, but they have two margaritas on the list that will surely make for a fantastic tequila tasting experience. The Habanero Lime Spicy Margarita comes infused with Habanero lime syrup, habanero bitters, fresh lime juice, Triple Sec, and Espolón Blanco Tequila. Their sweet and tangy Cantaloupe Margarita comes loaded up with rock melon syrup, fresh lime juice, Triple Sec, and Espolón Blanco.
