Did you know that Americans eat over 4 billion tacos every year?! Our obsession with tacos extends to a special day of appreciation, National Taco Day, which will be celebrated on Friday October 4, 2013. San Diegan’s are particularly lucky to live in an area where a good taco is not hard to find. To narrow down the search we scoured through all of La Jolla Mexican Restaurants and picked the top places to enjoy a taco on any given day!
Puesto Mexican Street Food
Puesto creates fresh and unique Mexican street style tacos made-to-order. What makes their tacos so unique (beyond using natural meats and self sustainable seafood) is that you see them prepare your taco before your very eyes. Think Subway, where you pick and choose what you want on your sandwich. What to get: Check out their newest creation–Cilantro Lobster Taco with crispy onions on house-made organic spinach tortillas. TACO DAY DEAL: 1 free Chile Relleno Taco – 1st 100 guests
Wahoo’s Fish Taco
This healthy casual restaurant serves up some of the best fish tacos in a relaxed environment. What to get: You can’t go wrong with the Original Taco–soft corn tortilla, cheese, cabbage, salsa and green sauce on all fish.
Don Carlos Taco Shop
A local favorite with an extensive menu where just about anyone can find something to eat (including vegans!). Don Carlos offers 3 kinds of tacos, crispy tacos, soft tacos, and rolled tacos. What to get: If you’re in the mood for a filling meal we suggest going with the Don Carlos Special—your choice of 5 beef, chicken, or potato rolled tacos. Served with rice, beans, guacamole, cheese, and a 12oz. soda.
Verdes El Ranchero
Another local favorite spot for great Mexican food and drinks in La Jolla. El Ranchero has two kinds of tacos on the menu–street tacos and deep fried crispy tacos. What to get: If you’re in the mood for street tacos try the carnitas tacos. For the deep fried try the crispy chicken tacos. Whichever taco you choose make sure to order one of their excellent margaritas!
Rubio’s Fresh Mexican Grill La Jolla
There is no doubt that Rubio’s has a pretty decent and unique fish taco. Our list wouldn’t be complete without it. Full disclosure: I once won a years worth of free tacos at Rubio’s (no joke). What to get: Gotta have their signature beer-battered fish tacos. If you want to go with something healthier try the grilled mahi mahi tacos. La Jolla/PB border: Oscar’s Mexican Seafood
Located on the border of Pacific Beach and Bird Rock, this small hole-in-the-wall restaurant serves up some of the best seafood tacos in town. This place gets pretty busy and parking is limited. Also make sure to bring cash as it is the only form of payment they accept. What to get: You can’t go wrong with any taco on the menu but our intern, Jack, recommends the Spicy Shrimp Taco–served with Cheese, Cabbage, Onion, Tomato, Cilantro, and Avocado.
