A brand new collaborative creation has been added to the shelves of Hi Sweetheart in La Jolla! “My Colorful San Diego” is a coloring and activity book (for all ages) complete with original illustrations by local artist Matt Perdoni and an original story line created by the store owner, Molly Rossettie, herself.
This bold one-of-a-kind coloring book takes readers through 24 pages of San Diego landmarks, as seen through the eyes of the adventurous Wright Family. They swim, surf, glide and dance their way through San Diego’s famous neighborhoods, beaches, and local treasures – including the San Diego Zoo, La Jolla’s sea caves, The Botanical Garden at Balboa Park, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, and more. The activity pages include a word find, crossword puzzle, draw-to-learn Spanish, tic-tac toe, riddles, and jokes.
The idea for the coloring book actually came from a customer who frequents the shop. Molly says the woman visits the shop regularly to buy gifts and cards for her grandchildren; the two were chatting and she mentioned that she hadn’t really seen a San Diego/La Jolla coloring book on the market. Molly agreed, and the idea began to take shape.
Molly recruited a friend of hers, Matt Perdoni, an illustrator and muralist from Boston who took an immediate interest in the project. Together, the two worked with graphic designer Jessica Wyman pull ideas together and select the landmarks and San Diego spots for the illustrations. Molly wrote the story of the adventurous Wright Family herself, which she says is based on visits from her own family from Orange County and New York – a real-life inspiration that lends the book an even more personal touch. She gave Matt some rough sketches of what she had in mind for the illustration – think “Wes Anderson meets Calvin and Hobbes” – and just like that, My Colorful San Diego was born.
Though Wyman was in charge of the design and layout of the book, Molly put together the story and put the idea into motion – making this colorful little book truly a labor of love!
