La Playa art gallery will be hosting a grand opening from 4-9pm this Saturday. Artists featured in the gallery will be in-house for the event along with wine and cheese. This is an intimate occasion for La Jolla patrons to meet with local artists and ask them questions about their style, inspiration and background face-to-face.
The gallery has been open on 2226 Avenida de la Playa by the Shores since May, servicing tourists and the summertime crowds. Now that this training period is over, La Playa is interested in showing off its gallery to the locals of La Jolla.
Victor Chun, an employee who helped open La Playa, described this as a rare occasion for patrons to meet in-person with the artists. Eight local artists make up 75% of the the gallery’s capacity, alongside regional artists from South America. The art ranges from hand-made pottery, ornate jewelry to oil paintings and design work.
The owner of the gallery Vaughn Woods, according to Chun, is an avid art connoisseur who has traveled far and wide. He is a portfolio manager, working on investments and with retired folk. He decided to make his empty storefront into an art gallery partly because of his sister Winnie Sample. Sample is an artist from Oregon who paints beautiful watercolors and is featured in the gallery. Wife and manager, Terrie Woods, said that Winnie was an inspiration for the Woods’ to open the gallery and the business has been expanding ever since.
