Happy Friday, La Jollans! This weekend is packed full of great events, and we’ve made a list of everything that’s going on in La Jolla and San Diego. Read up on all of La Jolla weekend events and start planning a fun-filled next couple of days with friends and family.
La Jolla Music Society Summerfest: Baroque Masterworks
When: Friday August 8, 8pm – 10pm
Where: St. James by-the-Sea, 743 Prospect St., La Jolla 92037
What: Listen to classical music by the greats – Handel’s Organ Concerto in B-flat Major, Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, Handel’s Violin Sonata in D Major. Tickets range from $50-$75 and are available on the LJMS’s website. For a complete program listing, visit ljms.org.
Summer of Seuss: A Dr. Seuss Show
When: Friday August 8, 6pm – 9pm
Where: Stephen Clayton Gallery. 1201 First St. Ste# 111, Coronado 92118
What: Celebrate the opening night of the Summer of Seuss Art Exhibition, featuring known and unknown works from the life of Theodor Seuss Geisel. Artworks will be on exhibition and available for acquisition. Artist representative, Jeff Schuffman will be present at Stephen Clayton Gallery the opening day of the exhibit at 7:30pm to provide insights into Geisel’s artistic life, his unique vision and his impact on American culture.
Dog Days of Summer
When: Saturday August 9, 10am – 5pm
Where: 2017 San Elijo Ave., Cardiff by-the-Sea 92007
What: San Diego’s largest single day dog-centric event is back! Visit beautiful Cardiff-by-the-Sea with your pups in tow to weave and wander through more than 6 blocks of the town that will be closed off for the event. Exhibitors include dog foods, dog treats, dog toys, dog leashes, collars and clothes as well as rescue organizations of every breed. The Lost Abby will be sponsoring a beer garden and the Belly Up Tavern has scheduled live music throughout the day; there will also be a full line of doggie contests!
Paper Theatre Festival & Exhibit
When: Saturday August 9 & Sunday August 10, 12pm – 5pm
Where: UC San Diego’s Geisel Library, Seuss Room. 9500 Gilman Dr, San Diego 92093
What: Paper theatre: it’s the smallest show on Earth! This scale-model educational toy is being re-discovered and celebrated at the UC San Diego Library this coming weekend. Also called table top theatre or toy theatre, paper theatre dates back to the Victorian Era; this weekend-long exhibit in the Seuss Room features replicas of Victorian Era paper theatres as well as modern versions of the toy. Live performances are featured each day, as well.
Exhibit and accompanying live events are free and open to the public!
3rd Annual CityFest
When: Sunday August 10, 12pm – 11pm
Where: 5th Ave and University Ave, San Diego 92103
What: Stay past sundown and dance with Hillcrest’s best DJs under the Hillcrest sign with CITYFEST NIGHT! CityFest takes place in the heart of Hillcrest and is a huge celebration of community spirit through music, arts, crafts, and food and attracts 150,000+ attendees each year. Enjoy live music from San Diego’s bands, check out more than 300 artisans and crafters, and hang out in the food & beer garden.
