Culture is all around us in our quant little beach city of La Jolla, if you go looking for it. For theater-lovers, the La Jolla Playhouse has a variety of shows coming up this season that are sure to draw in a big audience.
The current show is Tribes, only at the Playhouse until July 21, so hurry up and see it before it’s gone! Tribes is a contemporary play that shows a comedic look at family and poor communication. Billy, the only deaf member of his family, feels out of place in his loud family. He soon finds a home in the deaf community and trouble arises.
Coming up this season, Sideways, from the popular novel and movie, is coming to the Playhouse starting July 16 to August 25. If you haven’t seen the movie, it tells the story of two friends, Miles, a novelist, and Jack, a nobody actor and director, and their complicated lives. Jack is getting married so the two decide to go on a road trip in the Santa Ynez wine region as their last big hurrah. Expect some major midlife crises.
Future shows for the 2013-2014 season include The Good, The Bad and the I-5, put on by The Second City Comedy group, Without Walls Festival, 15 exhibits by local, national and international artists, The Tallest Tree in the Forest, showcasing renowned vocalist, Paul Robeson, and the bold choices that he has made in his life, Side Show, from the true story of conjoined twins, Daisy and Violet Hilton, and finally The Who & The What, which tells the story of a free spirit in a conservative Muslim family in America.
Hoping to grab dinner before a show? Although Wolfgang Puck’s La Jolla restaurant, Jai, has recently closed, there are other fun food options for you. If you happen to be seeing a show on a Friday, check out Foodie Fridays. Foodie Fridays is perfect for theater-lovers who also love good food. With your ticket to a show, you get access to some of the best food trucks in San Diego and a complimentary beer tasting. The ticket does not cover food, so you must bring cash if you want to purchase food.
Foodie Fridays start at 6:00 PM and occur on sporadic Fridays throughout the season. Foodie Fridays will be held on July 19, August 2 and August 16 for its summer dates. Check out the La Jolla Playhouse website for dates throughout the season.
