When most people think of acupuncture they think of needles which is then associated with fear and pain. This common misconception keeps many people from trying acupuncture. This was the case with yours truly until I decided to visit the experts at La Jolla Health & Acupuncture off Ivanhoe Avenue. The practice is headed by chief acupuncturist, Sooryun MJ Hong. Hong is a California Licensed acupuncturist born and raised in Korea.
What makes her style unique?
Hong has been practicing acupuncture for many years and has developed a highly-effective and unique style that focuses on healing the body and mind. Hong doesn’t treat specific problematic areas but rather treats the body and mind as a whole in order to bring balance and optimal health. In other words, she resets your entire body so it can heal itself. She assesses your body with the touch of her hands. Hong jokingly says that she’s been told her hands feel like she’s “playing piano over their body.” Her needle technique is also quite particular. Why does this matter? The direction of the needles is important because it is directing your body where to heal. Hong reiterates that she sees acupuncture needles as an extension of herself. She is in sync with the needles.
Hong is highly passionate and is dedicated to helping her patients achieve optimal health. Her patients also feel the same way as some travel as far as Los Angeles and Orange County just to see her. Hong’s full body acupuncture, head-to-toe and back-to-front treatment, is beneficial for many symptoms. Some of the benefits include, but are not limited to: speed up healing after surgery or injury, anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, eczema, and more. In most cases you can notice a change after just one session. For example, I volunteered to experience her technique. Right away, she was able to assess that I was carrying a lot of tension in my shoulders, as many of us do. After I signed the consent form and was prepped, I was ready to experience acupuncture for the very first time. The process was much like a massage, but in less time and with less pain. She feels your body for knots or tension and works her magic. Within minutes, my shoulders and arms sank, releasing all of the tension I had built up. The procedure was relatively painless and I had instant results!
