Visit the beach that has locals and tourists alike marveling at its picturesque views. The next stop on our La Jolla beach spotlight series is Wipeout Beach.

Activities

Wipeout Beach is a small stretch of land located just south of the Children’s Pool. Your La Jolla visit is not complete without checking out this tranquil spot lined with sandstone cliffs, blue waters, and soft sand. The name likely comes from the strong currents and shore breaks that can sometimes wipe beach goers right off their feet. There are quite a few activities that you can enjoy here:

Sunbathing– Because of the beaches intimate setting in La Jolla, it is the perfect spot to take in the San Diego sun. Not a lot of people flock to this beach leaving enough room to throw out a towel and lay in the sun.

Caves– There are a couple caves lining the beach that people can explore. However, they tend to be clogged up with seaweed and flotsam, making it difficult to get around. Beach goers are advised to explore with caution.

Tide Pools– At the very south end of this beach there is a rocky terrain. At low tide there might be some marine life to view in some tide pools. This is a lot of fun for young children.

Picnics– Usually there is enough space to lay out a blanket on the sand and enjoy lunch or a romantic picnic. If you wish to enjoy a lunch sans sand, head up the stairs and walk just a little bit north or a little bit south to some grassy expanses. Here you can enjoy your lunch while still getting some breath taking views of the Pacific Ocean.

Swimming– Because this beach has some rocky features and extremely rough shore breaks and currents, swimming is not recommended. However, you might still find some people brave enough to try.
