Although it’s Wednesday, it’s never too early to start making plans for the weekend! Reward yourself after a long week by heading down to the La Jolla Art & Wine Festival which will be held on lower Girard Ave on October 12th and 13th. The goal of this year’s annual event is to raise funds for programs at local elementary and middle schools so take some time out of your weekend and show your support!
As its name suggests, the main focus of the festival will be the one-of-a-kind art show, featuring the creations of more than 100 artists from San Diego, Southern California and beyond. Various types of art will be on display including ceramics, photography, drawing and sculpture. Each category of art will be judged, and prizes will be awarded to the top artists in each category. Love art? The artists will also have booths to display and sell their work to festival attendees so you can take those favorite, must-have pieces home with you.
In addition to the professional artists, children can unleash their artistic creativity at the festival. The YMCA Family Art Center is teaming up with great organizations including the San Diego Circus Center, San Diego Zoo, La Jolla YMCA, Girl Scouts, La Jolla Kiwanis, Outside the Lens and Geppetto’s toy store to create an unforgettable afternoon of fun for younger guests. Children have the opportunity to participate in many craft projects, including the paint a car activity where kids can get creative on an actual life-size car. Other activities include yoga, dance, chalk art, face painting, temporary tattoos and more! There will also be two scavenger hunts for additional family fun.
On both days of the festival, entertainment will be plentiful with two stages devoted to live shows and musical performances. Jazz, folk and bluegrass are just a few of the genres that will be heard at the festival. Some popular local artists that will be performing include Aja Lee, Blueberry Jam, Seaholm Mackintosh and True Stories. Dance and circus performances will also take place throughout the day to ensure you get your fill of entertainment.
Last, but definitely not least, there will be a food court and a wine and beer garden. Enjoy gourmet food selections from local restaurants and farmers’ market vendors. Some of our favorite La Jolla restaurants will be in attendance including Cups, Puesto and Nick’s BBQ. After grabbing a bite, quench your thirst with a locally brewed beer or international wine. Tastings are offered at $3 per tasting or a package of 7 tastings for $20.
