Sports plays a significant role at the annual La Costa Film Festival (September 10-13), not only because the festival itself is hosted at the historic Omni La Costa Resort which hosts several professional sport events like PGA and WTA tournaments, but because Carlsbad itself is a very “athletic community,” as described by founders, Michael and Ruby Callahan. This year, the festival also officially partnered with Mandalay Sports Media (MSM), giving them access to great sports programming. Here’s a closer look at the Sports Film Showcase which includes 10 films, several Q&A’s, as well as special appearances by Sacramento mayor & former NBA star, Kevin Johnson and renowned sled dog racer, Lance Mackey.
LA COSTA FILM FESTIVAL AND MANDALAY SPORTS MEDIA (MSM)
This year, the La Costa Film Festival officially collaborated with Mandalay Sports Media (MSM), which is a “sports-focused content and media company that creates high-quality and high volume programming.” MSM had a direct hand in this year’s Sports Film Competition, which will contain 10 narratives, documentaries, and shorts from a variety of talented film makers. One winner will be chosen and announced at the La Costa Honors Awards Gala on September 12.
This year’s entries bring topics from different corners of the sports world and showcase the tenacity and determination of several incredible individuals. The Great Alone is a documentary about Lance Mackey, a renowned sled dog racer. Filmed in the beautiful wilderness of Alaska, the film follows his journey to success in his career. The movie will be screened on September 11, and Mackey will be there along with one of his sled racing dogs.
Down in the Valley – part of ESPN’s 30 for 30 films – is the story behind the Sacramento King’s NBA team and their dramatic 2011 decision to move, which was ultimately reversed due to the fighting spirit of the Former NBA star and now Sacramento mayor, Kevin Johnson. Johnson will be present to accept the Ambassador of Sport award for his determination to keep the NBA team in Northern California at the La Costa Honors Awards Gala on September 12.
All-American Family is the inspiring short film about the Pedersen family, who live in a mostly deaf community in Pleasanton, CA. Screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, the short centers around the Pedersen boys’ experience participating on the local school’s notoriously good football team as they work towards winning another state title. The LCFF will also be hosting a Q&A panel for the film along with some of the film’s participants.
There will be 5 judges presented with the task of choosing a winner from the films found in the Sports Film Competition. The panel will include former LA Laker Brad Holland, Hollywood producer/content creator (and famous actress Jessica Alba’s husband), Cash Warren, and Heather Brown, a professional volleyball player and an Olympic Silver Medalist in the 2008 Beijing games.
For those who enjoy both sports and film, the La Costa Film Festival is a great way to participate in both. For more information on the festival, and to purchase tickets, visit the LCFF website.
